 | | WinKing: Found this to seemingly be a bit easier than yesterday's puzzle. I think I have the first few moves correct anyway. 14.Nxh7 <(or 14.Bxe6 dxe6 15.Qd3 g5 ; or 14.Qd3 Nxg5 15.fxg5 with a nice game. I prefer 14.Nxh7 by far over these two.)> 14...Kxh7
15.Qh5+ Kg8
16.f5 Ne5 <(or 16...d6 17.Rf3 ;or 16...Qe8 17.Qh3 )> 17.Bb3 Keeping the tension. <or 17.fxe6 Nxc4 18.Rxf8+ Qxf8 19.Rf1 & white's position looks great also)> Looks like white is close to winning here but still has some work left. This is as much as I have time for. Time to look & see what others think. |

 | | Once: Of course I didn't get the solution today. My name doesn't end in -sky. And yet it's so fabulously logical when you play it through. The whole thing hinges on the fact that the Bc8 can't move because black hasn't yet pushed either his b or d pawns. And that means that the Ra8 can't defend the back rank from the imminent pawn coronation. click for larger viewIn the final position, black might be tempted to lean over to his opponent and say ... "Old boysky, it seems dashed unfairsky that you've gone down an entire piecesky. Let me even this up a bitsky. How about I give you bishop oddsky? Here, I'll whip off the chapsky on c8. That seems fairer all roundsky." click for larger view |

| Apr-08-12 | | pogotheclown: This was pretty easy for a Sunday. Often as not I don't bother with Saturday and Sunday puzzles because I have a pretty rigid definition of what a combination is and what a chess problem is and when I see solutions that a 15 moves long and not all variations given are forced then that's not a combo as far as I'm concerned. [/end rant] Anyway, today it is a combination and not too tricky to see how it starts. Upto 16.f5 is easy, alternatives to nxh7 are all worse than useless. After that it gets a lot more involved. I got stuck on the idea of 19. rf7 for a long time before seeing the potential of Qf7 and then Bd4. Nice game. |

| Apr-08-12 | | Limpin Kt: <sevenseaman> agh! I overlooked a move for thousandth time! Anyway, i think the solution is <1.Rh1 2.kh1 Ng3> if i haven't overlooked anything else :) |
 |
| Apr-08-12 | | cyclon: I decided today on 14. Nxh7 mainly because Black doesn't seem to have decent alternative for 14. -Kxh7 <( for example if 14. -Ne6 moves whereever, White simply plays 15. Nxf8 and if -Qxe3+ 16. Kh1 White threats already mate by 17. Qh5X )>, after which comes
15. Qh5+ Kg8 16. Bd3 and in this position to prevent mate beginning with 17. Bh7+ Black has to play 16. - g6, <(for example; -g5 17. fxg5 or 16. -Rf6 17. f5 are both more or less disastrous for Black )> after which comes 17. Bxg6 and this is the critical position in my view. White threatens 18. f5 with ample compensation.
Black can try; 17. -Ned4 18. Rae1 and it's hard to find a good defence for Black e.g. 18. -Qg7 ( -Nxc2? 19. Bd4 wins ) 19. f5 intending Bh6, or 18. -Ng5 19. fxg5 Qxe3+ 20. Kh1 wins.
< >
Yet, if ( 14. Nxh7 Kxh7 15. Qh5+ Kg8 16. Bd3 g6 17. Bxg6 ) 17. -d5 18. f5 and if -Ne5 19. fxe6 ( f6 !? ), or 18. -d4 19. fxe6 dxe3 20. Bf7+ White wins. But maybe this isn't just "insane" ENOUGH. |

 | | Jimfromprovidence: I liked 16...d6 as well as a good defensive move.
click for larger viewNow the bishop protects the e knight so if black recaptures, it's more or less an even game. White can continue instead with 17 Bg5, forcing 17...Qe8, then follow with 18 Qh3. click for larger viewThis adds more support to the c8-h3 diagonal and thus makes 19 fxe6 a more dangerous threat. |

 | | Marmot PFL: <Jimfromprovidence> 17 Rf3-h3 and Ra1-f1 looks very unpleasant. |
 |
Apr-08-12
 | | Marmot PFL: At first I looked at 14 Qh5 g6 15 Qh6, which I like quite a lot but isn't a combination. 14 Nxh7 Kxh7 15 Qh5+ Kg8 16 f5 also looks tempting but i didn't try to go much farther than that. Black's game seems awful right from the start and I was surprised he would choose such a bad defense until I looked at the date. No wonder the Russians dominate, even a World War can't stop them from playing. |
 |
| Apr-08-12 | | Terry McCracken: < dzechiel: White to move (14?). Material even. "Insane." <sigh> "Insane." It seems like it should start 14 Nxh7 Kxh7 15 Qh5+ Kg8 16 f5
but since I found this in just a few seconds, I'm guessing that it's something far more involved. Time to check. =====
Yup, much more involved, and easy to understand when you are shown. White not only takes advantage of black's undeveloped queen side pieces, but also of the undeveloped queen side pawns. Very elegant solution.> The first few moves are very easy but even if you hadn't looked to the very end it really is fairly straight foward but elegant nonetheless. I gather Black had a nasty shock after 21. Bd4! No defence. |
 |
Apr-08-12
 | | Marmot PFL: The finish beginning with 17 fe6 is very elegant, but I only calculated 17 Bb3 and still can't find a way for black to defend. |
 |
Apr-08-12
 | | Patriot: White has the bishop pair.
Black is not completely developed and 14...Nxg5 is threatened when white loses the e3-bishop. 14.Nxh7 looks like an interesting shot. The problem is after 14...Kxh7 15.Qh5+ Kg8 16.f5 Na5 17.Bd5 c6 18.fxe6 cxd5 19.Rxf8+ Qxf8 20.exd7 Bxd7 21.Qxd5+ Qf7 and even though black's king is exposed, white's attack has deflated. So I'm thinking about the slow 15.f5. 14.Nxh7 Kxh7 15.f5
A) 15...Na5 16.Bd3 threatening 17.f6+ and winning the queen. B) 15...Nf4! 16.Bxf4 Qc5+ 17.Kh1 Qxc4
Line B is a big problem. I'm not seeing it... |
