Dillinger: * was an early chess computer developed by Japanese engineers held POW in California during WWII. Also known as the blunder-bot, the technology behind * was blamed for generating the tactical decision to bomb Pearl Harbor...

TrueFiendish: Does that just sound like a tall story or is it supposed to actually be one? :-)
Feb-22-04  Benjamin Lau: In computer systems, like DOS, * can be used to mean "wild" or "anything" so maybe * is another form of NN, meaning basically no one knows who the person is.

Dillinger: Probably an instructional game with goat moves for black. Look at Steiner's picture though, he's horribly bored.

  InspiredByMorphy: 12. ...c6 13.dxe5+ Ke6 is better.
Mar-02-05  soberknight: <InspiredByMorphy> Maybe 11...c6 is even better. In your variation, Black loses time by moving his king to d6 then back to e6.
Apr-13-05  zb2cr: <InspiredByMorphy>,

Not sure about your idea. 14 g4 looks strong in response, threatening mate.

I see 3 defenses:

a. 14 ... Kxe5; 15 Qe2+, Kd6 ( if 15 ... Kd4; 16 Be3+, Ke4; 17 Bc5# ); 16 Bf4+, Kd7; 17 Re1, Be7; 18 Qxe7+, Qxe7; 19 Rxe7+, Kd8; 20 Bxc7#.}

c. (14 ... cxd5; 15 Qf5+, Ke7; 16 Bg5+, Ke8; 17 Bb5+, Bd7; 18 e6! looks like it settles Black's hash. Th e only way I see out of mate for Black is 18 ... Qf6; 19 exd7+ and now he loses his Queen.

c. 14 ... g6; 15 Ke2! looks promising for White, although I haven't worked this out yet.

RonB52734: I had the black pieces today against a young fellow rated about 120 USCF higher than me. We played this game through and including 12...exd4. At that point, my opponent played 13.Re1 and I held on to win. Chessmaster 9000 likes 13.b4 best, giving it a +3.41 after about 10 minutes. It rates Steiner's 13.Bf4+ and my opponent's 13.Re1 both at about +1.00.

  MorphyMatt: 16. Kd2!! is great.
Sep-05-06  AbhinavAsthana: What about 11.Bxd5+! In case 11...Kd6 12.Ne4+ Kd7/Ke7 13.Qf7# If 11...Ke7 then 12. Qf7+ Kd6 13.Ne4#
Isn't it?
Oct-09-08  TheaN: Was thinking that, but after either 11....Kd7 White has close to nothing, but after 11....Kd6 12.Ne4†?, 12....Kxd5 seems to hold just fine. But even 11....Kd6 12.Ne4† Kd7?! 13.Qf7†? Qe7 , and White seems not to have any resources against the King on d7.

Elsinore: Nice game. It's a shame that we don't see modern players play more of an attacking style. Everything is 1.d4 d5, 2.c4 e6... We need some more excitement in chess, at least occasionally! How much would you bet that most of the time, NN is a known player but is too embarrassed by the game and asks the winner not to put his name on the scorecard?

Phony Benoni: Fried Liver with Munster Cheese? Now there's a tasty Halloween treat!
Oct-31-10  AGOJ: ZING-POW! I played 5...Nxd5 once mechanically (I was just starting in chess), was surprised when my opponent played 6.Nxf7, and happy to be a piece up! I thought I was winning! Well, that was a really unpleasant game...
Oct-31-10  lentil: I got my liver fried in my first rated game. Nasty intro to tournament chess!
Oct-31-10  Sularus: For once I want to see NN win. =)

  al wazir: 18. Qe3+ Kb5 (18...Kc6 19. Qb6#) 19. Qb6+ Ka4 20. Bb3#/Nc3#/Qb3# would have been just as pretty. Or after 18...Kb5, 19. Nc3+ Ka6/Kc6 20. Qb6#.

dark.horse: <Elsinore> It is very likely NN is a known person, though not necessarily known as a player. H. Steiner lived in Hollywood and played a lot of games with movie stars.

scormus: <dark.horse ... a lot of games with movie stars> Ah, that explains. I think NN was the actor Fred Gwynne, if I have the name right ;-)
Oct-31-10  Jim Bartle: Fred Gwynne would have been 19 in 1945 and had never been in a movie.
