Mar-28-06  TheKid: Hmmm...does 10.Nf6+ win immediately?

10...gxf6 11.Bxf6 and how can Black guard the g5 square efficiently?

Mar-28-06  Jonber: 10.Nf6+ isn't an immediate win if you by that means forced mate. Moving the bishop to e3 will cover g5 long enough for Black to bring additional forces into the defence. However, it will cost Black considerable to avoid mate so 10.Nf6+ is certainly winning.

10.Nf6+ gxf6 11.Bxf6 Be3 12.Ke2 Nd7 13.Kxe3 Nxf6 14.Qg5+ Kh8 15.Qxf6+ Kg8 16.Kxf2

Mar-29-06  TheKid: Ah, thanks Jonber.

  Eggman: <<10.♘f6+ gxf6 11.♗xf6 ♗e3 12.♔e2 ♘d7 13.♔xe3 ♘xf6 14.♕g5+ ♔h8 15.♕xf6+ ♔g8 16.♔xf2>>

Hmmm. In this line what about 12...♗xf5? (instead of 12...♘d7), e.g. 12.♔xe3 ♘g4+ forking King and Bishop, or 12.♕xf5 ♕d7 13.♔xe3 ♕xf5 14.exf5 ♘g4+ again forking King and Bishop.

Perhaps now 12.exf5 ♕c6 13.♔xe3 ♕xg2 14.♘f3 ♘g4+ (14...♘xh1 15.♖g1 wins) 15.♕xg4+ ♕xg4 16.♖ag1 h5 17.h3 ♕xg1+ 18.♖xg1+ ♔h7 19.♘g5+ ♔h6 20.♘xf7+, winning. So it looks like 10.♘f6+ is good enough after all.

Mar-30-06  PizzatheHut: Black's play in this game is perhaps the worst I've seen in correspondence.
Apr-05-06  Jonber: <Eggman> The lines you give in response to 12...Bxf5 are sufficient to win, however, White has an even stronger reply with:

13.exf5 Qc6 14.Nf3 after which Black must again resort to Nd7.

Since this simply leaves Black with one less piece compared to the line with 12…Nd7 it stands to reason playing 12…Nd7 right away would be the best defence. But either way, 10.Nf6+ would win the game.
