Oct-15-03  John Doe: remarkably simple... And yet I almost didn't get it because I was too busy calculating long range plans.

Sneaky: The "trapped piece" -- perhaps the most basic of all tactics, since checkmate itself is a case of a trapped piece.

  patzer2: I'm sure Sharma would like to have avoided 11. ..Ne7?? Better was 11. ..Bxd5 12. exd5 12. Ne2 13. c4 0-0-0 with counterchances, though white still holds a slight advantage. Also worth considering was 11. ..Nh7 12. c3 f5 or 11. ..Ng8 12. c3 0-0-0.

patzer2: In addition to white's good plan of 3. g3, the move 3. f4 is also worthy of consideration as in T Nylund vs R Tuominen, 1972 The developing move 3. Bc4 was not good for white in C Ippel vs Eric J Izaks, 2001 or A Warbruck vs U Trommsdorf, 1989 but these amateur games are not a real test of the move's merit. White did win with 3. Bc4 in S Meyer vs M Huehn, 1992 but this game was not a true test either.
