  al wazir: Why didn't black play 23...Bxb4 ? If 24. Qf6 then 24...Rxd1+ 25. Rxd1 Rh7. If 24. c5 then 24...Bxc5 25. Qf6 Rxd1+ 26. Rxd1 Rh7 26. Bxe6 Qe7.

  al wazir: 39...Bxf3, and if 40. gxf3 then 40...Rg7 41. Qxg7+ (41. d7 Rxg5+ 42. Kf2 Qc5+, etc.) Qxg7+ 42. Kf2 Rxh4 43. d7 Rh2+ 44. Ke3 Qg5+ 45. f4 Qd8.
Nov-01-06  ForeverYoung: To al wazir's first question: after 24 Qf6 Rxd1+ 25 Rxd1 Rh7 26 Rd8+ wins the black queen.
Nov-01-06  mrbiggs: Abba was a famous rock band awhile ago from Europe. Sweden, I think.
Nov-01-06  think: Bb4! is quite a stunning move. But not only is it a surprising gambit, it improves white's position even when declined.

al wazir: <ForeverYoung>: Thanks. I managed to dance all around that without seeing the answer.
Nov-01-06  mig55: It was a "Waterloo" for Wachinger:-)
Nov-01-06  Morten: Yes. "The winner takes it all".
Nov-01-06  kellmano: Guenther 'took a chance on the alapin' and ended up sending an S.O.S
Nov-01-06  mig55: Guenther "had a dream", when he played Bxf3 on 39 he could have had a draw...Guess he was in timetrouble?
Nov-01-06  Morten: How is it possible not to have one single pun to the fact that Björn and Benny (the two B's in ABBA) wrote the music to the Chess musical??
Nov-01-06  kevin86: It looks like black got a foot caught in a beartrap. He took the "poisoned" pawn and d6 and had to pay the penalty. Sometimes a piece can be protected after the fact as white's pawn was here.
Nov-01-06  jcb: al wazir: 39...Bxf3, and if 40. gxf3 then 40...Rg7 41. Qxg7+ (41. d7 Rxg5+ 42. Kf2 Qc5+, etc.) Qxg7+ 42. Kf2 Rxh4 43. d7 Rh2+ 44. Ke3 Qg5+ 45. f4 Qd8.

I think the answer is:

39. . . . Bxf3
40. Rxh7+ Rxh7
41. d7 Qh7+
42. Kf2 appears to weather the storm and leave Black hanging with the d-pawn about to queen.

If, instead:

40. . . . Kxg7
41. Qh4+ Kg8
42. Re1 Qxe6
43. gxf3 Rg7+
44. Kf1 seems to hold.

But not 44. Kf2? because

44. . . . Qc5+
45. Ke2 Rg2+
46. Kd3 Qd6+
47. Qd4 Qxd4+
48. Kxd4 Rxc2 loses for white.

Am I missing something?

Nov-01-06  bernardchinshin: ABBA is a pop group that flourished in the 70s and 80s with songs such as "Super Trooper", "Dancing Queen"; and "Take a Chance on me".
Nov-01-06  thegoodanarchist: I had suspicions about 23.Bb4 and they seem to be confirmed by Fritz (8). Fritz gives white a half pawn advantage after 22...Bb7 (0.53 ), then after 23.Bb4 Bxb4 24. Qf6 Rxd1+ 25. Rxd1 Kg8 26. Rxd8+ Bf8 27. Rxf8 Kxf8 28. Qxh8+, white's advantage is miniscule (0.16=)

  al wazir: <jcb>: Nice analysis.

After 39...Bxf3 40. Rxh7+ Kxh7 41. Qh4+ Kg8 42. Re1, I think black's best is 42...Be4. If 43. Bxe4 then 43...fxe4 44. Rxe4 (44. Qxe4 Qxe4 45. Rxe4 Rxe6) Qxe6 45. Rg4+/Qg5+ Rg7, with even material.

If 43. Qg5+ then after 43...Qg7 44. Qxg7+ Kxg7 45. Bxe4 fxe4 46. Rd1 Kf6 47. Kf2 Ke5 48. g4 Rxd6 49. Rxd6 Kxd6 50. Ke3 Ke5, it looks to me as though white wins. But I'm not very good at endgames, and I'm not sure what happens if black doesn't play 48...Rxd6.

  offramp: Abbas Hashemi:
Abbas means father and Ha-Shem is God, so his name simply means <Creator of God>, a sort of Uber-Jehovah.
Oct-28-17  morfishine: Great bluff by White: Black needed to only play <23...Bxb4> and White has nothing (though it takes some calculating to see it, I guess Black just didn't feel up to it)

Oct-28-17  thegoodanarchist: How surprised I was, to see that I had commented on this obscure game 11 years ago.

I thought back to November 2006, and remembered that I was unemployed at the time. So I could take a look at obscure games all day long.

Oct-28-17  ColeTrane: <offramp> you out did yourself on the retarded comments today boy.... hashem means "The Name" so this guy is named "The Name of the Father" more or less....because it's common knowledge that the Jews took the name Jehovah or "YHVH" out of they translations for they own reasons.... wow you really are a stupid cluck.
