Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-12-05   Jenspooch: Looks like a clear piece for Black
with 18...Nxa1 (instead of 18...Qxf8)
unless I'm missing something. As is,
Black just gets two B's for a rook.
Gaston does some needless flinching
after 22...Bxe5, with both 23 f3 and
27 b4 being bad.

Boomie: From Fritz's database, 6. Nf3?= (-0.02/13) has been played only 4 times out of 2776 games. And perhaps for good reason as white scored a miserable =1 -3. 6. Be3 (0.43/15) is almost always played and is optically the best move.

Fritz likes 6...Bxc3+ as the refutation of 6. Nf3 and frankly so do I. Losing the powerful bishop is unfortunate, but destroying white's queenside pawn structure is more than enough compensation. Curiously in the the 4 games in the database, no one took the knight. A likely variation is 6. Nf3 Bxc3+ 7. bxc3 Nf6 8. Bd3 d5 9. e5 Ne4= (-0.03/14).

18...Nxa1 19. Bxg7 Kxg7

(19...exd5 20. exd5 Kxg7 21. dxc6 Qxd1 22. Rxd1 Bxc6 23. Nd4 (1.31/13))

20. Ne3 Qxd1 21. Rxd1 Ne7 22. Rxa1 Bxe4 23. Nd4= (-0.21/14)
