Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-01-07   themadhair: <RT> <Can anyone give me analysis which shows how White wins here at the end? It would be good to see a Fritz or other analysis is or soneone who is better at chess than I - plenty here are. This opening is what my Chess Master insists on playing - I'm trying to practice the Najdorf against it. (I'm interested in both sides - as White and Black). And it keeps choosing the Re1 move (even when it plays itself although it only on 25 minutes each)...anyone know anything about it? Re1 I mean. *

* I've just decided to start using computers (for practice and anlysis of openings etc) so I have joined the conspiracy to end Chess!>

Firstly - in the final position blacks only hope is a perpetual. After 41.Rf8+ Kc7 42.Qf7+ Kb7 43.Qxd6 Ka7 and blacks perpetual is stopped by 44.qd6 covering the c4 square. Black can't stop that passed pawn without shedding material so a resignation was in order.

<Chessmaster playing Re1> Here g4 seems to be the most common move. Each of the commercial engines have a dedicated GM/IM working on their opening book and it is likely that Re1 was better suited to chessmasters style so it was included. Everyone has their own quirks when it comes to openings and this is likely one of the chessmaster team's quirks.

Richard Taylor: <themadhair> Yes - I missed something there - Black is lost - thanks.

Itis pity that the computer only plays the Re1 move - it is interesting hoawver. I set up other positions and get it to play itself and so on - thanks.

I have no doubt Fritz and all those are better. But I haven't got Fritz - only Chessmaster which I copied from my son's. I'll see how I go with it - the games where one plays through a master game and works out the moves are good and so is some of the training but it doesnt go far enough.

Jan-02-07   themadhair: I think you can download opening books for chessmaster or customize them yourself to play a variation you are interested in. This link may be of use (http://chessmaster8000.ubi.com/down...) but if you google it you shoul find some useful material on all this.
