plang: This was game #2 of their match in the third round of the World Championship tournament (game #1 was also drawn); Van Wely won in the tiebreaks and then went on to defeat Georgiev in the fourth round before losing to Adams in the fifth. 10..Nf8 is the only move listed in the theoretical works I have. Piket, with white, had faced the gambit 10..Ne4?! and declined it against the German player Kunge in a 1997 Bundesliga game. Van Wely couldn't see much compensation and accepted the pawn without much thought. Piket was successful, however, in reaching a complicated, unbalanced endgame but Van Wely pointed out that he would have won with 48 d6!..Rdxd6 49 exd..Rxd6 50 Rb7..b1(Q) 51 Rxb1..Nxb1 52 Rxc4..Nxa3 53 Rc5.
