Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-01-03  Rookpawn: 8. a3 would not have worked well either: 8... Nxc3+ 9. Qxc3 Qxa1+ etc. Also, any move other than a rook move would allow: 8... Qxa1 9. Qxa1 Nxc3+ etc. Finally, a rook move would allow the knight to take the a-pawn. So, White must lose some material.
Jun-01-03  BeautyInChess: How about 8. d4? Seems okay to me.
Jun-01-03  Rookpawn: 8. d4 Qxd4 9. Qxd4 Nxc3+ and Black has gained two pawns.

jaime gallegos: Nc3+ is not possible Rookpawn!, you meant Nc2+ !
Jul-26-03  WRWilliams: What about 8. Rb1 Nxa2 now 9. c3 trapping the knight?
Jul-26-03  Brian Watson: After 8.Rb1 Nxa2 9.c3,
9... Nxc3 10.dxc3 Qxc3+ 11.Qd2 Qxd2+ 12.Kxd2 would be interesting . . .

Alternatively, black retreats the knight after 8.Rb1, and white is a tempo behind in development and has an isolated pawn.

Eggman: <Alternatively, black retreats the knight after 8.Rb1, and white is a tempo behind in development and has an isolated pawn.>

Actually, White is not behind in development in this line, since his Rook already occupies a half-open file, and the tempo-gaining Nf3 will follow hitting the Queen. Also, despite his isolated pawn White has the advantage overall (I think) because his missing b-pawn will not be as keenly felt as Black's missing center pawn. Trading center pawn for Knight pawn in this opening (as Black did on move 2) is probably not a good idea.

Feb-16-05  schnarre: 8. c3 was a serious error here. I find Nf3 preferable.
Apr-08-05  Kangaroo: Two comments.
First, 8. Nf3 is followed by 8. ... Qxa1 [9.Qxa1 Nxc2+ and Black wins]

Second, 8.Rb1 suggested by < Brian Watson > may be followed by something else, not necessarily the greedy move 8. ... Nxa2 after which Black will possibly lose the knight for up to three pawns.

For instance, 8. ... a5 with the idea to move the Knight back on c6 after 9. a3 is a plausible development of the game. It would have been much better than the checkmate!

Jan-11-06  schnarre: Hmmmmnnnn.....8. d4 maybe?!
Apr-09-07  crptone: <Rookpawn: 8. d4 Qxd4 9. Qxd4 Nxc3+ and Black has gained two pawns.>
