 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <vibes43: 7. f3 was the reply I considered to 6...Nd4 ... I expect someone will shoot that down though by eod.> Not likely to be shot down. Preliminary results indicate that 7.f3 would have been the best response by the white, I am just waiting for the analysis to get deep enough to be reasonably trustworthy. 7.h3 is also pretty good, continuing thus: 7. ... Nxc3 8. dxc3 Nf3+ 9. Bxf3 Qxd1+ 10. Kxd1 The above appears to be the best play for both sides after 7.h3, and arrives at this position: click for larger view
where black has 2 reasonably good choices (19-ply analysis): 10. Bxf3 (-1.42)
10. O-O-O (-1.35) |

| Jun-28-07 | | not yet a patzer: <nhat8121: I don't understand why white didn't take the queen and be 1 piece up ?! > 8. Nxd5 Nf3+ 9. Kf1 Bh3# |

 | | Wolfgang01: White stands uncomfortable, but how about castling with 7. 0-0? I don't see, how black will keep his pressure on white's position. Or am I chess-blind for the moment?? If black doesn't continue with Nf3+, white can pin off his Ne2 with 8. f3 and all clouds are gone for the first. 7. Bxd5?? is weak. How will black continue his attack? Nf3+ allows Kh1 and on time whites position can become safe again. |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | matein6: Wolfgang01, if 7 0-0 then 7.. Nxc3 wins a piece and either an exchange or Q for B+N. After 8. (either b or d) takes c3, 8.. Bxe2 forks Q+R and is protected by the N on d4. White can't play 8. Nxc3 as the N is pinned to the Q. |

 | | MostlyAverageJoe: <Wolfgang01: White stands uncomfortable, but how about castling with 7. 0-0?> 7 ... Nxc3, with the idea of 8 ... Nxe2+ and 9 ... Nxg3+, goodbye white queen. |

 | | MostlyAverageJoe: OK, final installment of the analysis. Two best lines in response to 6. ... Nd4 seem to be: 7. f3 Bxf3 8. Bxf3 Nxf3+ 9. Kf2 Ne5 resulting in this position: click for larger view
and two best moves for white being now (18-ply analysis): 10. d4 (-1.23)
10. Nd4 (-1.40)
And a branch off the above line:
9. ... Nxc3 10. bxc3, resulting in this: click for larger view
and two best moves for black being now (18-ply):
10 ... Ng5 (-1.27)
10 ... Ne5 (-1.09)
The difference between 7.f3 and 7.h3 is still not large enough for my liking to declare f3 better. However, there is no doubt that white should've played one of them. I am kinda happy with the expected line from my first posting, as it does not seem to diverge too far from the above variants). MAJ over and out for tonight |

| Jun-28-07 | | PositionalTactician: Hey! This is an opening variation! Why are they putting opening variations here? |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | mkrk17: My instinct told me Nd4 is right. But i didnt go too far analytically. I'll consider that as a miss on my side. Need to pull up my socks for friday... |

| Jun-28-07 | | Fezzik: I once played a sac line very similar to this, so I found the ideas behind this very quickly. The key to the win is shown after 6...Nd4! 7.Bxd5?! Qd5 8.Nd5??Nf3+ 9.Kf1 Bh3# All the other lines, as MAJ and dzechiel have shown, end up winning for Black as well. But that's just the math to support the proof. Of course, the details are important, and thanks to both for working them out in such detail, but I really doubt that Schmid worked out *every* detail before playing the winning the move. This was a really good Wednesday-Thursday puzzle. The position is the sort that could actually occur in many games and yet is rarely punished. Good choice, CG.com! |

| Jun-28-07 | | realbrob: <MostlyAverageJoe> I agree with you. The line I considered was 6..Nd4 7.f3 Bxf3 8.Bxf3 Nxf3+ 9.Kf2, Black is up a pawn and White's kingside is quite horrible. I thought that in case of 7.h3 Black can play 7..Nxc3 8.dxc3 Nf3+ 9.Bxf3 Qxd1+ 10.Kxg1 Bxf3 and White's development looks ruined. Still, I was perplexed because it's Thursday and I hadn't found any way for Black to win, just to get an advantage.
7.Bxd5 was a big blunder for White, I think. |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | 2ndNature: I don't think 6...Nd4 should be today's puzzle. The reason being that although this move leads to an advantage for Black, yet it doesn't force anything - the result of the game still seems to be open. 7.Bxd5 is a blunder, maybe 7...? should a puzzle. I would say:
"7...? Black to play and win" and put it on some Tuesday (7...? seems to be to hard for a Moday material). BTW, I did go for 6...Nd4 but was disappointed not being able to find anything convincing after that. |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | eblunt: After 6 ... Nd4, I can't see anything clearly winning against 7 h3. |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | Kangaroo: <<eblunt>: After 6 ... Nd4, I can't see anything clearly winning against 7 h3.> Try <6 ... Nd4 7. h3 Nxc3 8. bxc3 Bxe2> and evaluate consequences. Or <6 ... Nd4 7. h3 Nxc3 8. dxc3 Nf3+ 9. Kf1 Qxd1+> |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | eblunt: <Kangaroo: after 6 ... Nd4 7. h3 Nxc3 8. dxc3 Nf3+ > Then 9 Bxf3 , Not 9.Kf1? and still don't see the clear win for Black |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | Tactic101: You have to find the BEST move. We won't get positions which have tactics that win on the spot. Here, Nd4 is the best and most forcing move that gives black the advantage. |

 | | ahmadov: One of the difficult puzzles that I managed to find... This is my week I think... |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | AVA: I play this opening as white, and 4.Nge2 is bad..the main move is 4. Bc4, and white has an effective game against Alekhine's Defense or Scandinavian Gambit. |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | eblunt: <Tactic101: You have to find the BEST move. We won't get positions which have tactics that win on the spot.> We do normally !! Especially Monday to Thursday. |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | Tactic101: True. I was just making a small reply to a few previous users who thought this wasn't a really good puzzle. I think it is. |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | thorndeux: The first thing I notice is that the white queen is a little cramped. Could be some smothered 'queen mate'. The black d5 is hanging, so either it's a move with that piece or an active move with another piece, like the c6.
One idea could be 6... d4 threatening 7... xc3 and 8... xe2 or 8... xe2.I) 7. xd5 loses to xe2
II) 7. xd5 is more complicated, but xe2 might work too:
8. xf7+ xf7 9. xe2 d5 is an idea.
But after this line white has 10.f3 which seems to limit the damage. After all black had to give a pawn, too and can't castle anymore. So I guess I'm wrong or I missed something. 10.0-0 might work too for white:
f3+ 11. h1 ( g2 e2++ 12. h3 h5#)
9... f3+ right away takes away white's right to castle, but that doesn't seem to be enought. Well, I guess this is too hard for me, so I'll have a look at the solution now. |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | thorndeux: Of course! Qxd5. Well, well. Tomorrow is another day :) |
 |
| Jun-28-07 | | zb2cr: Huh. I'll have to give myself only 1/2 credit, as I found the line which occurred in the actual game, but did not find the imaginative defenses 7. f3 or 7. h3, mentioned and analyzed by <MostlyAverageJoe>. |
