 | | ahmadov: This is a very useful puzzle in terms of order of moves. |
| Dec-13-06 | | greensfield: I went down a slightly different route:< 9. Rxd8+ Kxd8 10. Bxf6+ gxf6 11. Qxe4> same outcome |
| Dec-13-06 | | vibes43: It looked white could win with 9.Qxe4 Nxe4 10.Re1 f5 11.f3 so I looked no further. Obviously I should have. |
| Dec-13-06 | | echo unlucky: Bronstein must have seen the trap before 8. 0-0-0 or he wouldn't have left the knight en prise. Brilliant, definitely a Wed puzzle. |
| Dec-13-06 | | eblunt: Actually got it for once. Stupid question, but NN is only actually Rook and Knight for Queen down when he resigned, or am I missing something obvious about to happen to White ? |
| Dec-13-06 | | vagrantlike: Yes!!I got this one immediatey.:)Good tactic from then WCC candidate. After some trial and error , includin' lookin' for threats, better position, and ways to get black's Q,finally the forcin' rook sac at d8 with a check to my mind.David must have had this idea in mind while playin'7.Nxe4.If I were black, I would not have taken that N with comfort. All in all,it's a good deal for white.LOL:) |
| Dec-13-06 | | TheBB: <Actually got it for once. Stupid question, but NN is only actually Rook and Knight for Queen down when he resigned, or am I missing something obvious about to happen to White ?> Well, positionally white is much, much better. Black has an exposed king and huge problems castling. It's a straightforward win, methinks. |
| Dec-13-06 | | MarioBalibrera: Again, easy to solve as a puzzle, but I shudder to speculate whether I'd think of it over the board. |
| Dec-13-06 | | Dres1: <Vagrantlike> <Got this one immediately... After some trial and error , includin' lookin' for threats, better position, and ways to get black's Q,finally the forcin' rook sac at d8 with a check to my mind> Pick a story... stick to it. |
| Dec-13-06 | | prinsallan: Yep, easy today - harder perhaps to see in a game, but easy as a puzzle. |
| Dec-13-06 | | MaxxLange: Black was some random guy that Bronstein met on a train, not a pro chess player, so I don't think that it mattered much if it was a known line. |

 | | chrisowen: Nxe4 and King baldy smiles from cartoon heaven |
| Dec-13-06 | | Whitehat1963: So simple. I wish I weren't so blind! |
| Dec-13-06 | | Brown: Bizarre, just last evening, I saw this exact puzzle in one of the "303" Puzzle books (Perplexing Puzzles, I think). It was in the first, and easiest, section, called the "Advanced Beginner." Had me scratching my head for about 2 minutes, enough time to realize that, perhaps, I am STILL merely an advanced beginner. |
| Dec-13-06 | | DanRoss53: I failed miserably; in my head 9. xe4+ xe4 10. d8+ was mate. |
| Dec-13-06 | | ianD: Great puzzle! |
| Dec-13-06 | | think: Blacks only other legal move loses in the same way. |
| Dec-13-06 | | deadparrot: hm... let's see: The Nc6 is pinned, but we cannot make anything useful of that. black queen is only protected by Nf6. How could we get rid of that defending piece? Exchanging doesn't work, but we can force it into another pin with Rd8!! |

 | | Eggman: <<It has to be a well known line in the center game (aka Scandinavian).>>
The Center Game is not also known as the Scandinavian. You're thinking of the Center Counter (1.e4 d5). |
| Dec-13-06 | | MenisfromVenis: Pretty obvious really. BlK in the middle, Ns pinned, took about 30 sec to check a few variations (including 9. Rxd8+ Kxd8 10. Bxf6+ gxf6 11. Qxe4) b4 deciding Rd8 wins the Q outright. |
| Dec-13-06 | | Rubenus: I found Qxe4 and thought I solved it but I didn't see that Rd8# is not possible. Indeed a very good puzzle! |
| Dec-13-06 | | simsan: Acknowledging that white was down a piece, I realized that white had to either mate or snatch the Q in the next couple of moves for this to be a puzzle. Instinctively I thought 9.Re1 looked great, pinning the Q and the K. Sadly it looses to 9. ... Qxe1# Blundering into mate in 1. *sigh* I guess I did "a Kramnik". |
| Dec-13-06 | | Wade Keller: Finally a Monday puzzle after two Sundays! |
| Dec-13-06 | | zb2cr: I'm with <Rubenus> and <DanRoss53>; I simply glanced at the position, said to myself: "9. Qxe4+, Nxe4; 10. Rd8#--this is a misplaced Monday puzzle." Upon looking at the solution, I smacked myself smartly in the forehead with the palm of my hand, realizing I should have seen the Knight on c6 was no longer pinned since the White Queen had vacated a4. |

 | | YouRang: Got it pretty fast. The first thing that jumped out at me was the traditional rook & bishop mate threat with Rd8. To make the mate work, I need to get rid of the f6 knight. One way would be to capture the queen, but then that releases the pin on the c6 knight, allowing it to guard d8. Grr. Not finding a way to make the mate work, I started looking at it backwards. After the immediate 9. Rd8+ Kxd8, now the f6 knight is pinned and the black queen is hung. :-) |
