Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-10-04  InspiredByMorphy: Im surprised nobody has commented on this game yet. Look at the difference in the ratings and the result of the game. Bravo Khalifman for playing the Bird's defense so well against one of the world's best.
Aug-12-04  Whitehat1963: Khalifman proves there's still plenty of life in one at first glance looks like a crazy defense against the Ruy Lopez. Opening of the day.
Nov-25-04  milanez: it's interesting to see how kasparov treats this couple of days later, where he plays 10. c4 instead of 10. a4(in game 4 of their match-this being game 2- was khalifman foolish to attempt it again?)Kasparov vs Khalifman, 2002
Apr-17-05  Achilles87: Foolish to attempt it again?
Khalifman has this game won. Kasparov is just delaying the inevitable loss in this one. Its good to see a player not resign, but this is cowardly negative play by Kasparov at the end, just avoiding a loss instead of going for a win.
Apr-17-05  who: What are you saying? You think Kasparov should let Khalifman mate him, just because Kasparov botched up the early part of the game?
Jan-13-17  vonKrolock: Yes, Khalifman was very near to his first victory over Kasparov after 60.Qb2

He could play 60...Qa4! etc. This was his best chance.

But before, when White's position was already unsatisfactory, Kasparov displayed a beautiful spurt of ingenuity with his exchange sacrifice 21.Rxc5! bxc5 22.Bxd4 cxd4 23.Nb3, a pity that after 23...Qc7 24.Rxe6 fxe6...

...he did not continue 25.Qe1!, that would be in fact the critical sequence. For instance, if 25...Qc3, then 26.Qxe6! Rd6!? 27.Qe7+ Kc8 28.g3! with more than enough compensation

May-19-21  thegoodanarchist: Gary tried and tried to make it work, but in the end Alexander Cauliflower survived.
