Nov-23-02   drukenknight: Sneaky you talk about Anastasias mate and Philidors mater. isnt there something called Epaulette mate that looks similar to this?

its called epaulette because the K is flanked by two pieces and so it looks like he is wearing epaulettes on his shoulder.

Anee how.

Nov-23-02   ughaibu: Some mates here: http://www.ex.ac.uk/~dregis/DR/vuko...
Nov-24-02   drukenknight: Schiller I think used to have a web page with lots of mates. I dont think I have the link, maybe someone can do a google search.
Jan-16-03   morphynoman2: Maybe one move was missed in the original score, and black king actually was in h8. And then, this combination is perfect at all.
Jan-16-03   ughaibu: On the other hand white doesn't play like a very strong player and maybe he took the queen. Have you a suggestion for the missing white move?
Jan-16-03   Bears092: Looks to me like Qxa6 was the big mistake.
Jun-07-03   darnold: what if after 34. Ka2 ... Nd2 threatening mate?
Jun-08-03   Shadout Mapes: 35.Nxc7
Jun-08-03   morphynoman2: How 35. Nxc7, Shadout? White king is in check.
Jun-08-03   Shadout Mapes: I was replying to darnold's 34.Ka2 Nd2 with 35.Nxc7.
Jun-08-03   sleepkid: ...the kind of mate you'd expect from a great problem composer.
Oct-17-03   MoonlitKnight: His opponent must have been Ztupid not to play 34.Ka2.
Oct-17-03   Alchemist: I just have to say that this is a beautiful adaptation of the smothered mate.
Mar-03-04   Whitehat1963: Interesting game, but what's the purpose of 12. f4?

vonKrolock: i believe this is the game in which Loyd anounced a forced mate starting whith the sparkling 29...Ta1!!?, and his adversary, evidently trusting in Loyd's genius, resigned the game imediatly, and only after this saw that it's not a forced mate at all (34.Ka2!! instead of the text move) more details in A.White's Loyd's biography... (the tournament's comitee judged the question in Loyd's favour!)
May-14-04   RunnerUp: after 32. Ka2...
ra8 with mate in 1. am i missing something? doesn't 29...Ra1 still force mate?

tpstar: <RunnerUp> The previous posters are correct = after 34. Ka2! Ra8+ 35. Kxb3 Black has no attack, so best was 34 ... Qxc2 and now Sneaky's 35. Qc6! consolidates nicely by preventing 35 ... Ra8+ (and not 35. Qxb3? Ra8+ wins the Queen). Therefore, it should be designated 29. Ra1+?! instead, but still an enjoyable and unique combination.
May-14-04   RunnerUp: KxB3? Isn't the knight on D2?

tpstar: <RunnerUp> Good job, friend = attention to detail! The same move which loses the first time (32. Ka2? Ra8+) wins the second time (34. Ka2!). Get it?
May-14-04   RunnerUp: ahh... i've been looking at 32.Ka2, not 34.ka2. good feedback tpstar
Nov-02-05   prinsallan: Shockingly beautiful by the puzzle master.
Dec-27-05   DeepBlade: hah, how funny! I tought it was an smothered mate gone wrong!
Mar-07-06   Isamaru: BEAUTIFUL!!!!
Jan-02-07   jackmandoo: and you think you've seen it all and then this game comes along. Just a super neat checkmate there.
Oct-03-09   WhiteRook48: 34. Ka2!! refusing the sac actually wins
