| Kenkaku: <tamar> Just trying to add a little bit of abstract philosophy into the mix. With Einstein's theories being discussed (which I find interesting as well), I feel that someone has to put in a word for philosophy (yes, I know, please don't argue with me over the definition), lest it be completely overrun by the discussion of scientific reasoning on this site (yes, it has many abstract qualities as well, but there are some differences). It also allowed me to make a nice joke of course, though perhaps a case could be made that it is more true than one would believe (realtive to the Platonic school that is). If chess is simply left at the starting position, all of its forms are the same; therefore there is no conflict of forms, and perhaps you could assume that since this is the universal link between all chess games, if the game is left untouched it is the perfect form of chess. So, to conform to the ultimate truth, set up the board and quit. One could of course define chess as a board game however, in which case that changes the whole argument. |

| Lawrence: <Kenkaku>, perhaps the board is just a figment of your imagination. Same as Life. |

| Vischer: <What about "Macedonian attack"?:-)> I name this the Kramnik System. |
 |

| square dance: does anyone know the story behind this historic encounter? |

| Vischer: <Square Dance> see earlier posts by Honza. |

| williscreek: This well known position is clearly a draw unless someone were to make a mistake. |

| Phoenix: I tried to convince this one guy I played that this position was a book draw, but he stubbornly refused and wound up losing in time pressure. |

| square dance: i play this friend of mine whos so bad he makes me feel like fischer or kasparov or something, but anyway when he has white in "this position" i tell him to go ahead and make his first mistake. either that or i say he already made his first mistake by agreeing to play me. its all in good fun of course. :-p |

| ruylopez900: chessgames.com has this as A00 Uncommon Opening. While this is true I think ECO should expand itself to include this opening. What do you think of <Chess Game Declined, ECO Code F00>? |

| tamar: I have seen the final position of this game displayed in stores for years, and it must have been seen by billions of people. I nominate it for the most famous game of all time. |

| iron maiden: Forget the Kramnik, there are many other more suitable names for the zero-move draw, such as: -The "Cold War." Lots of friction between the two sides, but it never amounted to any actual fighting. -The "Diplomatic Solution." The two armies decided to sit down and discuss their differences, and discovered they were all the same. -The "Sudden Simultaneous Realization by Both Players That There is More To Life Than a 64-Square Board." |

Mmm...statistically drawish, but interesting nonetheless. I think some computer analysis on the position of this opening would be enlightening. |

| arifattar: Hello everyone. I have been a keen reader of your comments for a couple of months now, but have restrained myself on commenting. But having read your comments on this game, thought I should finally take the plunge.(Sorry for those 'comments'.) I have a suggestion for the name of this opening. How about 'The Drawish Gambit Accepted'? |
 |
May-06-04
 |
| iron maiden: Welcome, arifattar! "Drawish Gambit Accepted" is pretty good, but I think I'll go with ruylopez900's Chess Game Declined. |

| jaime gallegos: hehehe, sorry if you open this game |

 |
| Vischer: I think it should be called kramnik attack or defence, depending on who offered the draw. If white did, it's the kramnik attack. If black did, it's the kramnik defence. And about the Drawish Gambit accepted, there isn't really anything being gambited, so it can't really be a gambit. |
 |
May-06-04
 |
| iron maiden: Of course they're making a gambit! They gambited away a bunch of respect. Of course, like all gambits, they recieved compensation for the respect in the form of some serious chessgames.com fame. |

| dac1990: <great board high up in the sky... > Chess has become a religion! Everybody run for your lives! Leave your valuables and pets at home! Repent! Spend all your money now, before it's too late! *End caffeine high*
Ahem. Well, if I had to give this game an opening name, it would be the "Sudden Simultaneous Spontaneous Combustion Draw By Default Defense" |
 |
| Jun-15-04 |
| catfriend: I'd call it the "Evergreen game" - how can it die?! Every chessplayer remembers it by heart forever! |
