Oct-07-03  AdrianP: Is this really a different game to

J Schulten vs Kieseritzky, 1844

It seems extraordinary that Schulten would lose in exactly the same moves twice within two years... I thought my chess was bad enough...!

Oct-07-03  luckybaer: Schulten must have been the Washington Generals of the chess world. At least he looks like a tomato can based on his record of games in this DB. Anyone know who he was?
Nov-29-03  fred lennox: Quite a minature. Near 1/4 of white moves is by the king. It's interesting how the undevelop rook on h8 becomes develop.
Dec-01-03  catfriend: A typical Andersen game:)
Quite pretty.. but i wonder how would he play an endgame with this style
Dec-01-03  catfriend: BTW, can somebody show me a won endgame by Andersen?

refutor: here's a won endgame by anderssen Adolf Anderssen vs De Riviere, 1860 the easiest way to do it is to put anderssen in as the first player, set it to "first player wins", and set moves at least 50
Mar-27-04  ArturoRivera: Cmon my friends, why would anderssen wanted to have a better endgame if he never was compell or obligated to have one, his amazing atack style, the beauty of his combinations are not related to the analitic and frivol combinations of and engame 3 vs 3 pawns and the fight of the king. this my friends, is not a simple chess game, its art itself...
May-31-04  steven18: I don't know who's games from the 19th century I find prettier, Morphy's or Anderssen's? What do you guys think?

I believe Morphy had a better "all round" game then Anderssen but I can't decide who's attacks I like better :-)

Jun-15-04  ArturoRivera: <steven18> : talking about who was more spectacular, the battle is quiete close but anderssen's sacrifices were always a huge show, however, what we have not seen is the amount of games that were cheated by a good defense of anderssen's opponentīs, the secret to defeat him was reach the endgame... Morphy in the other side, was a very spectacular player, but he also had some positional concepts and a very well concept of development (the prove is that he beated anderssen) However, talking about show anderssen is better (not for much), but in an overall, Morphy ruled the land!
Nov-14-04  misguidedaggression: nice, but 17...Nf3+ 18.Kh5 Bg4# is slightly quicker.
Nov-14-04  sneaky pete: <misguidedaggression> That's what Kieseritzky played in the game referred to above by <Honza Cervenka>. I don't believe this game was actually played. It can't be found in Pickard's collection of Anderssen's games, nor in the Oxford Encyclopedia of Chess Games, and as far as I know Andersssen never visited Paris before his 1858 match against Morphy.
Jul-22-05  Orbitkind: Holy crap. Nice combo.
May-30-06  jackmandoo: After the queen sac the rest is somewhat easiley calculated. However, its the Queen sac itself thats hard to see. I'm pretty sure only me and a couple other GM's saw it coming, most of your were probably surprised. Sometimes being so good takes all the fun out of chess. I dont get to be amazed anymore, im the one doing the amazing. Hua, what a world,.....what a world.
May-11-07  Emma: I think apart from the superbe finale the quality of this game is absolutly shocking! It was a bit like watching juniors at times.

Schulten 3 mistakes:
12.Bc4 -3.66 (12.Qe1 0.12)
13.Bxd5 -13.38 (13.Qe1 -3.41)
14.Qe1 #7 (14.e5 0.00)

Anderssen 3 mistakes:
8...Nd4 0.30 (8...Bd6 -0.13)
10...f3 0.94 (10...d5 0.30)
13...Bd6 0.00 (13...fxg2+ -13.38)

Jan-28-08  just a kid: Holy moly!Great game!
Oct-08-08  Trigonometrist: A knight sac would've been great...

19...Ndf5+
20.exf5 Nxf5#

Dec-13-08  DoubleCheck: Excellent use of the healthy bishops, after Queen sacrifice with Ne3+ white was finished

I think whites sealed move was either Nxa8 or Bc4

One idea might be to try 12. Bf4?!

12. Bf4?! Nxb5
13. Qxf3 Bb7
14. c4 Bxa8
15. cxb5 Bc5
16. Ke2 (releasing h-rook) ...Rf8
17. Rhc1 Ba5
18. Rc4 h5 (possible waiting move)
19. b4 Bd8
20. Rac1
Unclear...

Jan-03-09  WhiteRook48: what surprises me is why Schulten didn't play 6. Nf3 instead of 6. Nc3??
Jan-20-09  WhiteRook48: Black missed an earlier mate:
17...Nf3+ 18. Kh5 Bg4# 0-1
Feb-07-09  swarmoflocusts: WhiteRook48

I suspect he saw it and simply played the more beautiful, albeit longer, mate.

Jul-15-11  nolanryan: I think a good pun would be "a bishop killed schulten."
Jul-15-11  nolanryan: maybe a tuesday level pun
Apr-26-12  Llawdogg: Another flashy win by Anderssen.
Jun-17-12  e4 resigns: "Schulten 3 mistakes:
12.Bc4 -3.66 (12.Qe1 0.12)
13.Bxd5 -13.38 (13.Qe1 -3.41)
14.Qe1 #7 (14.e5 0.00)

Anderssen 3 mistakes:
8...Nd4 0.30 (8...Bd6 -0.13)
10...f3 0.94 (10...d5 0.30)
13...Bd6 0.00 (13...fxg2+ -13.38)"

Odd how 13...Bd6 is the move played by both strong players.
