Aug-12-03 | | ksadler: <chessgames.com> Althought I was without internet access while this game was going on, I think that it is an excellent idea (upon reflection as I had been critical of the medium) to continue the live games on this site! |

 | | Sneaky: Yes the live chess event was awesome. Can't wait for the Kasparov match. And hey, this is the #1 most kibitzed game on all of chessgames. What's more, it's mostly really good discussion. (Beating out the previous winner Van Den Doel vs Stellwagen, 2003 another live game.) |

 | | plang: Played in the last (10th) round owhich f a six player double round robin; entering the round Kramnik was a full point behind Bologan thus needing to win to tie for first. Earlier in the tournament Kramnik had played 8 f3 against Naiditsch and had not gained any advantage; here he varied with 8 e3. 9..Nbd7 has been almost universally played; Bologan had prepared the logical 9..c5 which has not been repeated. Bologan thought that, despite his preparation; 10..bxc would have been a stronger continuation. 21..a6 22 Nc3..Rxd1+ 23 Qxd1..Bc6 24 Bg3..Nfd7 would have left White with a solid positional edge. White's patient maneuvering led to an advantage that would have been even more dangerous after 23 Bf2..Nh5 24 g4..Ng7 25 h4..gxh 26 Rh1; instead after 22 Bg3?! Black gained some time to initiate some counterplay of his own. 25 Rd1?! was a surprising concession; White would still have had pressure after 25 g4..f5 26 h4..fxg 27 fxg and if 27..gxh? then 28 Rh1. After 32 g3? White no longer had any advantage; better would have been 32 g4..f4 33 Bd3..Nf6 34 Bb1..Be6 with some edge. White gave up attempting to win and offered a draw with 38 Nc3 smartly avoiding 38 Nxa7?..g4 39 Kb2..Nc3 40 Bc3..Kg6 41 Bd3..Kg3 42 Nb5..Bxb5 43 cxb..Ne4 when it is Black who would have been winning. |
