Sep-28-04		misguidedaggression: Why resign? 47.Rg8 and sac it for the g pawn. If white takes out the d pawn as well (maybe via b3-c4), Then black needs to take out 3-4 passed pawns without sacing a piece just to reach a difficult to win endgame.

Sep-28-04		tamar: <mga>Going a little further though, you are right. 47 Rg8 Ng5 48 Re8 uses the newly opened e file to at least hang on into the endgame. Should be easily won, but worth looking at.

Sep-29-04		tamar: I checked it with Fritz 7, and White can indeed win without losing the g pawn, but it is not simple. Would have made a nice entry in the Handbuch des Schachspiels too, had they played it out. 47 Rg8 Ng5 48 Re8 Nf3 49 Rg8 Bg4 50 Rh8+ Kg5 51 Rh1 g2 52 Rd1 Kf4 The key move. 53 a5 Nxd4 The knight is immune from capture, as the rook has no way back. 54 Re1 Kg3 The King heads for f2 to take away the rook's last square. 55 Kb1 Kf2 (Now if 56 Rc1 Nd2 57 Rd1 Nc3+ decides) 56 a6 Kxe1 57 a7 g1Q 58 a8(Q) Bf5 59 Ka2 Bc2 (White has no hope, as now 60 Qxd5 Bb3+ wins it)
