patzer2: This game provides an excellent example of knight and pawn endgame technique. Glad to see Korchnoi continuning to play against the younger GMs, even though he struggled in this particular tournament. This was a well played game.
Aug-26-03  fred lennox: I question 35...Rf8. White's control over the f file is not useful. Meawhile black can create counterplay on the queenside. White's position favors a centralize king more than black. This is often decisive in endgames. A further minus to exchange rooks.

patzer2: <fred lennox> I think you are correct about 35...Rf8 offering to exchange rooks as being questionable, especially with the relatively weaker black pawn structure. What do you recommend instead? Is 35...a4 premature at this point?
Aug-29-03  fred lennox: It's possible. A problem for black is the d pawn is forced to protect the e pawn and so can't attack. This makes the queenside weak. So, dislodge the knight 35...a4, b4...Nf6, Nxf6 (f3 is inferior)...Kxf6, and maybe Kf3...a3 with counter chances.
