offramp: The title of today's GoTD, "Design by Committee", refers to a tagline used in European advertisements in the 1990s by <Volkswagen Cars GMBH>.

The ethos of the conceit is that although Black's movements seemed the essence of purity, they were in fact full of garbage.

Oct-14-15  thomastonk: Pretty bad play on both sides. Black had a clear advantage in the early middlgame. Advancing his c-pawn was only one possible plan, but once chosen, he should have executed the idea d3/♘d4 many moves earlier. And 30.. ♖xd6 is really awful.
Oct-14-15  Viennablue: I think 9.....Nxf2 would have been interesting!
If 10. Kxf2 then 10...fxe6+ with strong play and 2 pawns for the knight... Maybe not 100% sound on a grandmaster level, but offering great tactical opportunities, I'd say! Greetings from Vienna
Oct-14-15  kevin86: white ends up the exchange ahead.
Oct-14-15  The Kings Domain: Good game. Nice maneuvering by both sides.

Staunton played well. It's too bad he avoided Morphy. Even if he didn't stand a chance, if he played as well as he did in this game it would have been an interesting match.
