Aug-20-14  JonDSouzaEva: According to "British Miscellany, and Chess Player's Chronicle, Volume 5", White was Frederick Lokes Slous, not Howard Staunton.

jnpope: Agreed. The game is also found in Walker's Chess Studies:

Again, given as Slous-Popert.

jnpope: I think the originating naming problem is whatever Jay Whitehead used as his source for game 02236 (game 06566 appears to be the same game).

jnpope: I think I may have found the original source for the error. The Oxford Encyclopedia of Chess Games, 1981, p90, gives this game as Staunton-Popert and cites the Illustrated London News, 1864.

In checking the ILN I found the game published in the issue dated 9 Jul 1864, p90 as being <The well-contested Game which follows was played between Mr. Slous, an eminent member of the London chess circle formerly, and Mr. Popert.>; so even though they cite the source, they botched the names.

I know Jay was originally looking for games not found in the OECG, so he probably used that as his starting source and then began looking for games not in it. I think this explains why Jay has the game twice in his database, i.e. games 02236 and 06566). And CG either used his database and weeded out the wrong game initially (i.e. the Slous version) or they imported a data-dump of the OECG with the Staunton version in it.

Also of note, the ILN version ends at 31.Bxf8, the Chess Player's Chronicle, v5 1845, p74, ends with 31.Bxf8 Kxf8 Rxh7, and the oldest source, Chess Studies: Comprising One Thousand Games, 1844, p121, ends 31.Bxf8 Kxf8 Rxh7 fxg4 33.hxg4.

jnpope: One final thing, Jay's database lists 6 additional Popert vs Slous games, all of which are dated 1836, so this game is probably from that year (and not 1842 as given here and in the OECG).
