May-28-04  ConLaMismaMano: 23.Rd7!! wowwwww...I love the Gelfand of the 90's!
May-28-04  Jim Bartle: Shirov deserves some credit, too. He plays dynamic games which leads to losses and wins, rarely plays conservatively to avoid any chance of losing.

notyetagm: This game won the prestigious Chess Informant Best Game Prize as the best game in Informator 73. The panel of 9 judges, each rating the games on a scale of 1-10 with 10 being best, gave it 79 out of a possible 90, a tremendous score. This game received 7 (10-point) first place votes, 1 (9-point) second place vote, and a zero from the judge who just happened to be named Alexei Shirov!

Personally I like the line-closing move 25 Be6!.

Feb-03-06  MoranCho: I'm getting a look sort of like
Gelfand himself as I look at these
moves. It's just unbelievable.
Maybe on 25...Rf6, simply 26 Bxd7
would be best. Harder to sift thru
are the complications of 26 Be5.
Apr-08-06  itz2000: Great game! should be tomorrow's game of the day!
Apr-08-06  itz2000: GREAT GAME!

What happens if 25...Bxe6?

Apr-10-06  fgh: <itz2000>: 25. ... Bxe6 26. Qh5+ Bh6 27. Qxh6+ Kg8 28. Qh7#.
Feb-25-07  chessmoron: Time to delete this game in my collection . It's not forgotten after all.

If 37. gxh3?, then 37...Rgg2 and draws.

RandomVisitor: 27.Qc1 might be a faster route to the win for White.
Feb-25-07  chessmoron: <RV> Does 27.Bd6 work as well?

  RandomVisitor: <chessmoron>Yes, apparently...

Feb-25-07  amuralid: Not even close to getting the move. WOW!!
Feb-25-07  Tactic101: One word: Amazing! Looking foward to Monday. 5/7 this week. Thought they would pull off some difficult puzzles after the first easy 5.

WBP: Why did Shirov have to take the rook at d7? Why not 23...Nc5? If 24.dxe5, then a2 looks strong; and otherwise (if not dxe5), he's still gotten out of the bind. The black bishop on g4 is vital to preventing the infiltration of the white queen in to the black kingside and should therefore not be moved, as the game demonstrated.

  WBP: Sorry--24.bd6 refutes this!
Feb-25-07  alshatranji: I have slipped into the mindset that the Sunday puzzle, or the others too, should have one move that settles the game. When I conidered 23. Rd7 I thought it was not "decsive" enough, as it just escapes the queen's attack. Better luck next time.
Feb-25-07  alshatranji: Does anyone know of a complete analysis of this game? I have a few questions about it.
Feb-25-07  vesivialvy93: Missed this very interresting move !!! i think to get the solution in less than a minute a player need 2000 elo minimum...even if this is a 2600 elo move in game condition it's very hard to find it even when we know there is a winning move...AND against the guy who beat Kramnik that year !

It would be interresting to know the elo rating of all players who get the first move of this problem please if it's possible ? thx!

  mig55: 27 Qh5 looks better.
Feb-25-07  goodevans: So what happens after 27 Be5 Bxe5?

After 28 Qh5+ Kg8; 29 Qg6+ Kh8; 30 Qh6+ black loses both bishops, but 28 … Kg7; 29 Qxe5+ Kf7 seems to hold it together better than in the game. Black’s last pawn could become a serious problem so maybe white needs to force the issue with 30 Qa5.

Feb-25-07  scholes: it is amazing 19 rc7 was part of combination knight on b8 would not have allowed rd7

mig55: White then plays Ra1 and wins.
Feb-25-07  percyblakeney: Never even considered 23. Rd7 and gave up quickly, as usual on Sundays...
Feb-25-07  Catilina: Indeed. The rook just moves to d7 and says "capture me". To my eye it doesn't seem actually _do_ anything very special there.

pittpanther: I feel like I am still missing something. Can't black play 23 ... Qb5 or Qb6? What is white's immediate plan for victory? It seems that after 23... Bxd7 that white gets a brilliant win but what about quieter moves by black?
