White is threatening Qh7+ Kf8 Ng6# Black must take.
21...dxe5
The other two captures lead to mate.
22. Qh7+ Kf8 and the rook battery leads to mate.
But this is just a fantasy, a vivid dream. There's a spoiler. Does 21...hxg5 stop all of this? 22. Qg6+ Kh8 (Kf8 leads to the above nonsense, nice when variations go to the same place) 23. Nf7+ should clean up nicely, though it's the road really open for black. |

Qg6 wins for 25...Ke7 is met by 26. Qf7+ Kd8 27. Ne6+ Rxe6 28. dxe6 and White at the very least will be up an exchange up with an attack still available to him. LTJ |

Qxe8, and from here on it only gets uglier. or B) 23...Nd7 24. Ne6+ Qxe6 25. dxe6 Nf5 26. Rxf6+ Nxf6 27. Rf7+ Kd8 (27...Nxf7 28. exf7) 28. Qg5+ Ne7 29. Rxe7 Rxe7 30. Rf8+ Kc7 31. Qxe7+, etc. |

If there is one bad feature about White's configuration it is his N sitting in front of his doubled Rs. The N being en prise twice doesn't hurt. 21. Qh7+ looks good but the Black K can dive into f8, a safe haven. So some preparation. 21. Nh4 seem to carry more strategic clout as it brings in Qg6+ and also threatens Ng6 to breach the 'safe haven'. It may force the advance of f6 to keep the doubled Rs at bay. So; <21. Nh4 f5> (a must; taking the g5 N is irrelevant)<22. Rxf5 Bxf5 23. Nxf5+ Kf8 24. Nxh6+ Kg7> (double check forces the K to move)<25. Qh7#> I do not know if there are any holes, but they will be found out.

Stockfish says that black can play 22...Bf5, but 23.Qxf5 Qg7 24.Ne6 is crushing. It seems to have a slight preference for this line over the game line. |

Against 21.Ne5! the EGT finds 22.hxg5! etc. No time for more now: over to the interested kibitzer to polish off the EGT. White has a draw by perpetual check in one line. |

I don't think I can add a single point. <sevenseaman> This is a beautiful line starting with <21.Nh4>. I too was drawn to this move eyeing <g6> for the White Queen. Unfortunately, I think Black improves in your line with <21.Nh4 f5 (very good observation) 22.Rxf5? (I was tempted by this move too>... Here, I think the improvement is <22...hxg5> instead of 22...Bxf5 since white won't get enough for the Queen...I think!! |
