Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-30-15  Marmot PFL: Certainly 31...e3 must be promising: 32 fg3 fg3 33 hg3 Qxg3+ or 32 gf4 ef2+ 33 Kxf2 (33 Qxf2 Qxa5) Qxf4+
Apr-30-15  gofer: I think black has lots of options; Pf3, Pxg3, Bxf1, Rdf8, but good as all those are I am going to <gofer> another...

<31 ... e3!>

Black threatens 32 ... exf2+ 33 Kxf2 fxg3+ (Qxf2 Qxa5 ) 34 Kg1 gxh2+ 35 Kg2 Bxf1+ 36 Rxf1 Rxf1

32 Bxd3 exf2+
33 Kxf2 fxg3++ (Qxf2 Qxa5 )
34 Kg1 gxh2+ (Qxh2 Qxa5 )
35 Kh1 Qg3

I think black has to threaten the weak back rank and forget about taking the bishop as black's own back rank is weak too!

Not totally convinced about this one...

Apr-30-15  cocker: White could have played on (less than 2 points down)?
Apr-30-15  morfishine: Tricky because 31...f3 is so tempting

<31...e3> seems better since 31...f3 can be met by 32.Qa1+ Kg8 33.Re3; Pressure is ratcheted up against the White Kingside while at the same time, eyeballing <d2> for a rook to land on

31...e3 32.Bxd3 exf2+ 33.Kxf2 fxg3+ 34.Kg2 Qc6+ 35.Kh3 Rxd3

*****

Apr-30-15  wooden nickel: Yeah, 31... f3 is tempting, but 31... e3 is better!
However, if 32.Ra1, then Black still has to prove he's not kidding!

  Penguincw: I didn't go for anything complicated: 31...Bxf1 32.Rxf1 Rd2. :|
Apr-30-15  TheaN: 30 April 2015 <31....?>

This one has me a little bit stumped: I doubt whether this is truly Thursday, seems more difficult looking at the possible complications.

Black has set up a formidable kingside attack. A potential way to attack for black from the puzzle position is the queen & pawn lock-in mating pattern, ensued with Bxf1, f3, Qd7 and Qh3. However after some analysis it becomes apparant white has two moves (during f3 and Qd7) to defend against a black queen invasion, and the pattern is insufficient.

Then the focus shifts to blowing up the white kingside. After fxg3 hxg3 black has not accomplished much, in fact, that move order reinforces the white kingside. Instead, black should use the overloaded white queen and the fragility of f2 with <31....e3!>.

A) <32.Bxd3 exf2+> the point is setting up the f-file doublecheck <33.Kxf2 (Qxf2 Qxa5 ) fxg3++ 34.Kg1 (Kg2/Ke2 Rf2+ ; Ke3 Qf4+ 35.Ke2 Qf2+ 36.Kd1 Rxd3+ )> the king side is almost gone <34....gxh2+ 35.Qxh2 (Kg2 Rxd3 ; Kh1 Rxd3 )> mind that now 35....Qxa5? is a gross mistake due to 36.Qe5+! and at least perpetual but the d3-bishop is insanely strong and will probably win for white. Black should except the rook endgame two pawns up with <35....Qxh2+ 36.Kxh2 Rxd3 > and this should be won.

White has quite some alternatives, but most variations come down to black winning an additional pawn or more on the kingside.

B) <32.gxf4 exf2+ 33.Kxf2 Qxf4 34.Kg1 Bxf1> now if <35.Qa1+ Kg8 36.Rxf1 Qg4+ 37.Kh1 Rxf1 38.Qxf1 Rd1 >, otherwise white loses quickly.

C) <32.fxe3 f3!> shifts the combination to the passed f-pawn. <33.Rd1> 33.Kh1 f2 is similar to playing away the rook first. Anything else follows f2+ with a rook gain <33....f2+ 34.Kg2 (Kh1 Be4+! 35.Bg2 f1=Q+ 36.Rxf1 Rxf1#) Qc6+ 35.Kh3 Bf5+ 36.g4 (Kh4 Qe4+ and soon mate) Qf3+ 37.Kh2 Qf4+ 38.Kh1 Be4+ 39.Bg2 f1=Q+ 40.Rxf1 Rxf1#>.

D) <32.f3> acknowledges the problem, yet the fix doesn't really help <32....fxg3> the g-pawn is immune because Qxg3+ wreaks havoc. After <33.Bxd3 Rxd3 > black is up two pawns.

E) <32.Qa1+ Kg8> can be considered for any of the above variations but it doesn't really help.

Apr-30-15  TheaN: There is a considerable difference in the potential of Qxh2 with Qe5+ if white plays Bxd3 or fxe3: after fxe3 as in the text the e-file is blocked and black threatens Qxe1+ after Qxa5: that's why in the game Qxh2 doesn't work: Qxa5 .

32.Bxd3 however is inferior because of 32....exf2+ 33.Kxf2 fxg3++ 34.Kg1 Rxd3! and black simply keeps the pressure. 34....gxh2+ 35.Qxh2! Rxd3! still wins, as in my variation A but it's more tricky. 35....Qxa5? is indeed perpetual after 36.Qe5+ Rf6! =, 36....Kg8 37.Bc4! wins.

After 32.fxe3, f3?! is a mistake because of 33.Kf2! which I completely missed. Any other move in that position indeed wins quickly. The text is best.

After some thought Stockfish destroys 32.Ra1 with 32....fxg3!! 33.fxg3 (hxg3 exf2+ ) e2! and white's attack is too slow.

Interesting position, but pretty complex for a Thursday.

Apr-30-15  whiteshark: I visualized the game moves but couldn't figure out how to continue after <34.Kh1 Rxd3 35.Qb2+ Kg8 36.Ra2>.
Apr-30-15  kevin86: Missed this one...looking for a closed position, not an open one. my move was f2- before or after an exchange of bishops.
Apr-30-15  BOSTER: <gofer: Not totally convinced about this one> . If you are not convinced self, how you can convince other.
Apr-30-15  agb2002: Black is one pawn ahead.

Black can weaken the white castle with 31... Bxf1:

A) 32.Kxf1 f3

A.1) 33.Rxe4 Qd7

A.1.a) 34.Re1 Qh3+ 35.Kg1 Qg2#.

A.1.b) 34.Re3 Qh3+ 36.Ke1 Qxh2 37.Rxf3 Qh1+ 38.Ke2 Qxf3+ wins.

A.1.c) 34.g4 Qd3+ wins.

A.1.d) 34.Qa1+ Kg8 35.Rh4 Qd1+ 36.Qxd1 Rxd1#.

A.2) 33.Qe6 Qxa5 wins.

A.3) 33.c6 Qc8

A.3.a) 34.Rxa7 Qh3+ 35.Kg1 Qg2#.

A.3.b) 34.Rc1 Qh3+ 35.Ke1 Qxh2 wins.

A.3.c) 34.Rxe4 Qh3+ as in A.1.b.

B) 32.Rxf1 f3 (probably stronger than 32... Qd7 33.f3)

B.1) 33.h3 e3

B.1.a) 34.fxe3 Qxg3+ 35.Kh1 Qxh3+ 35.Kg1 (35.Qh2 Qxf1+ wins) 35... Qg3+ 36.Kh1 Rd5 wins (37.Rf2 Rh5+ 38.Rh2 Qe1#; 37.c6 Rxa5 38.Qxa5 Qg2#).

B.1.b) 34.Kh2 e2

B.1.b.i) 35.Rc1 Rd1 36.Qb2+ Kg8 37.Qc3 e1=Q 38.Qxe1 Rxe1 wins.

B.1.b.ii) 35.Re1 Rd1 36.Qb2+ Kg8 37.Qc3 Rxe1 38.Qxe1 Rd7 39.Ra1 Qxc5 wins a second pawn with an overwhelming position.

B.1.c) 34.Rb5 e2 35.Re1 Rd1 36.Qb2+ Kg8 37.Qc3 Rxe1+ 38.Qxe1 Rd7 as in B.1.b.ii.

B.2) 33.Rb5 Qc8 (33... Qd7 34.Qb2+ Kg8 35.Rb8 looks more complex) and the threat 34... Qh3 seems to win.

Apr-30-15  kohlhaas: I'm with whiteshark!
Apr-30-15  OutOfSync: Someone help me out. Is chrisowen schizophrenic? I'm serious.
Apr-30-15  wooden nickel: <agb2002: Black can weaken the white castle with 31... Bxf1> I concentrated on pushing the e pawn, so that the exchange 31... Bxf1 didn't even occur to me... looks great! <OutOfSync: Someone help me out. Is chrisowen schizophrenic? ...> I don't know chrisowen personally, but his phrases seem artistic to me, kind of like a chess rap which deserves respect!
Apr-30-15  Pawn Slayer: @OutOfSynch:re Chris Owen

I've thought the same myself. His posts are totally pointless and incomprehensible.

Apr-30-15  JimmyRockHound: Yes. What's the score with Chris Owen?
Apr-30-15  JimmyRockHound: Maybe CO writes something sensible then runs it through Google Translate a few times?
Apr-30-15  Funology: He can write normal English when he wants to (I've seen at least one perfectly coherent post from several years ago) but for some reason rambles in his peculiar Joycean dialect. I have seen the hypothesis advanced that he doesn't speak English and so has to Google Translate from his native tongue, but this seems unlikely for various reasons (e.g. what was the original language? Martian?). Personally I think it's one of those cases where someone has been trolling/joking around for so long that they have forgot the original purpose of the joke.

Thank you! My first idea was actually 31...e3 but I don't remember why I discarded it almost immediately.

English or non-English speakers can learn more vocabulary by reading any of <chrisowen>'s posts than in most English language texts.
