sagahelten: Can anybody explain to me why black gives up? As far as I can see, there is no convincing line for white after 25. gxf6.

  sagahelten: After 25...gxf6 26. Rxh7+ Kxh7 27. Rf4, black plays: ... f5 28. Rh4+ Qxh4 29. Qxh4+ Kg6 and the best white has got is perpetual check.
Mar-24-04   slapwa: How about 27. Rxh7+, Kh7; 28. Qh4+, Kg7; 29. Rf3, Rg8; 30. Rg3+, Kf8 31 Qh6+, Ke8; 32 Rxg8+, Kd7; 33 Qh3+ &c?

AgentRgent: Black is rated 100 pts less than white, perhaps he just assumed he was lost after Rh4?
Mar-24-04   square dance: fritz8 gives the position after 26.Rh4 a -1.22 evalutation.
Mar-25-04   slapwa: oops: just noticed 29. ..., Qe5 busting my line.
Mar-25-04   karlzen: <square dance>, If you let Fritz run for a while, I'm sure it will give 26.Rh4 an equality sign.

I can see two possbile scenarios (that black ran out of time is highly unlikely but of course also possible). 1) Black missed f6-f5. 2) The score sheet hsould say 25.Qg5 and not Qg3. This scenario is the most likely as black can (with the current score sheet) also take on f6 on his 24th move, without real punishment.

My conclusion: the score sheet contains an error.
