bumpmobile: This game is almost identical to the Operahouse game until about the tenth move. Funny, Starbuck didn't play to take the rook with 8. Qxb7 either...
Apr-13-04  ForeverYoung: 10 Nd5 is a nice shot forcing the gain of the pawn on f7 if black plays the best move (10 ... Qd6)
Jun-05-04  pawn2E4: suppose blk goes 12).......c6,then what?..does it lead to an immediate win,or just a long game with a winning position for white?...i'd appreciate some you power players out there responding to this...thanks

tpstar: <pawn2E4> Sir, we're all power players here! 12 ... c6 is a very good suggestion and far superior to the game continuation. Best play would be 13. Bxe5! because 13 ... cxb5 14. Bxb5 regains the Queen (14 ... Qxb5 15. Nc7+ & 16. Nxb5), then after 16 ... Nxe4 White is 1 Pawn up, or 13 ... cxd5 14. ed and White is 2 Pawns up. In fact, Black should have played 9 ... c6 (instead of 9 ... Nbd7?!) to prevent 10. Nd5 as in the game. But White should have played 12. Nxc7+ winning the Ra8; by that point he probably saw the upcoming mate over his less experienced opponent. It's important to review these games looking for improvements and determining what went right/wrong, so keep at it!
Jun-29-04  pawn2E4: tpstar..........thanks a lot!! appreciate that!!! it's guys like you that make chessgames so much fun!
Jun-29-04  DanielBryant: This should be Game of the Day just because of all the pun possibilities.

FSR: I think tpstar is saying that Starbuck's 12.Bxf6?! is an example of coffeehouse chess. I guess that's to be expected.
Nov-02-09  wolfmaster: Wow, talk about coffeehouse chess...
Nov-02-09  WhiteRook48: he was going coffee

FSR: Wait a sec - according to chessgames' profile of Daniel Starbuck, he died in 1884. But he played this game in 1906! I hope I play this well when I've been pushing up daisies for 22 years!
Aug-25-10  Whitehat1963: Faster than Morphy.
Jun-08-11  Graham1973: <FSR> The game was published in 1906 without a date or location being provided.
