Phony Benoni: "However, Kupchik, menaced by the closeness of Maroczy, who bid fair to tie him for second place, had his hands quite full with Lasker. The latter emerged from the opening with flying colors and, incidentally, with a pawn plus. Kupchik had much at stake, and his eight-year-old boy had come down to the lake to see his dad wind up in a blaze of glory.

"So something had to be done--and Kupchik was equal to the task. He drew the game in 59 moves and enjoyed the unique distinction of outranking Maroczy, as well as Marshall and Lasker. <Later, Kupchik remarked that it never had paid him to play passively for a draw, as he felt he did at the start of his last game with Lasker.>" -- Brooklyn Daily Eagle, July 29, 1926.
