  Phony Benoni: Actually, this game was played in round 10 of the US Open, and feeatured two players who were part of a tie for first place at the time (with Walter Shipman, Larry Melvyn Evans, and Hans Berliner.

To put it mildly, this was not one of Donovan's better days.

According to an article on the tournament (from Michigan Chess, August 1992), this was a pet line of Bisguier's, so Donovan may have been trying to take him out of book. But there are reasons some moves are not in books.
