plang: Ward declined Sadler's gambit by not playing 7..Nxc3 or 9..exd both which give white a strong initiative. 11..Qf6 was new and an improvement over 11..0-0
which had led to a clear White win in Rechlis-Brunner 1990. Psakhis recommended 12..0-0-0 as a more consistent follow-up to 11..Qf6. Sadler initiated a dangerous attack with 17 d6 and 24 c5! but after 29..Ref7 Ward achieved enough counterplay to obtain the draw. 30 f3..Ke7 would have allowed the Black king to escape to the kingside. After 30..Rxf2 31 h3 would have been answered by 31..Rxa2!
