Sep-23-04  percyblakeney: Simone Antonio could have sacrificed in his other game against Dubois too. 13.Nxe4 could have been followed by 13. ... Qxb2 14.Nd6+ Kf8 (cxd6 loses the queen) 15.Nxf5 Nf2+ 16.Rxf2 Bxf2 17.Ng6+ Kg8 18.Qe5. Then after the forced queen exchange Rh7 won't work for black because of Rf1 and the bishop is lost due to the mate threat. If 13. ... Qxe4, followed by exchanges on g4 and e4, white will also be slightly ahead. Maybe.
Sep-23-04  sneaky pete: The immediate 19... Bxh3 seems to force # (20.gxh3 Rxh3+ 21.Kg2 Rh2+ 22.Kxg3 Rh3+ 23.Kg2 Rg8+). Maybe with 20.Nf2 .. white can hold out a bit longer.

I don't have board and pieces or an engine at hand to analyse, but shouldn't black have played 9... Bd4 10.c3 Bxe5 11.fxe5 Ng4 followed by .. Qh4 with a fierce attack? Or after 9... Bd4 10.Ng6 Rh6.

Of course he could have played 9... Bxb4 as well, f4 .. with b4 .. being the silly kind of gambiteering that stems from MacDonnell and white's compensation not being obvious.

If both men were Italian and living in Rome, were these 2 games really played in London?

Sep-23-04  percyblakeney: Yes, Fritz agrees with you that 9. … Bd4 is the best move. After 10.c3 Bxe5 11.fxe5 Ng4 12.h3 the machine after some thinking likes Qd3 even better than Qh4 (12. … Qd3 13.hxg4 hxg4+ 14.Kg1 g3). However, 19. … Bxh3 doesn’t work since there is no bishop left to support a checking rook on h3.
Sep-23-04  sneaky pete: <percyblakeney> That's right, the checking rook was only supported by the ghost of the bishop, still very visible to me on the screen. After 19... Bxh3 20.gxh3 Rxh3+ 21.Kg2 Rh2+ 22.Kxg3 Rh7 I suppose 23.Nf2 Rg8+ 24.Ng4 .. is sufficient, so Dubois was right in playing 19... Rg8 first.
