12.Qxc3 is the type of move that always puzzles me. I would play bxc3 without blinking-- just seems like b-file is of more use than the c-file, and a pawn on c3 supports white's center more. Yet in such positions white does sometimes take with the queen. Can anyone explain why?

Feb-11-07   Shams: well, there is a backwards pawn on the b-file.

i suppose it comes down to whether you intend to capture when black breaks with ...c5 or ...e5, or leave it alone.
