Kibitzer's Corner
May-12-04  mikhs: What's wrong with 16...Rxa8 ? It leaves black up 2 very active pieces for a rook.

tpstar: If 16 ... Rxa8?! 17. Qf3 wins a piece (17 ... Rc8 18. Qxf4; 17 ... N4d5 18. Nxd5 Nxd5 19. Qxd5) leaving Black the exchange down with no compensation. The text (16 ... Nd3!) was a fine exchange sacrifice threatening 17 ... Rxa8 but also 17 ... Nd7 & 19 ... N7e5 (= the game) with a strategically won position. A Knight on the sixth rank is often worth more than a Rook, since it disrupts your opponent's position immeasurably and leads to sparkling tactics. Here it kept White hogtied until a simplifying combination netted Black a Pawn, which at this level is enough to win.
May-13-04  mikhs: Missed 16.Qf3 completely. Sorry for a stupid question.

tpstar: <mikhs> Dude! There are no stupid questions on this site, just maybe questionable suggestions! But that's how we learn chess = finding potential improvements and alternate variations in these database games. At least you had the courage to ask, and as you get better, you'll have the courage to answer.
