Honza Cervenka: Interesting fight. Janowski should have won this game but playing 53.b5?? he chose a seemingly won pawn endgame which was surprisingly only drawish.

tamar: <"seemingly won pawn endgame"> Man oh man! it hurts to watch the end of this game. I suppose it's a bit of an optical illusion, but White could have counted moves and seen he could not win after 43 b5??. Even if he plays 48 Ke5 preventing the Black King from winning the h pawn, and even if he wins the Black h pawn himself, Mieses' only option, going after the faraway c pawn still draws. The win is there on 43 though. Janowski just had to lure/force the K onto the g file and then advance the g pawn when he could retake with the R as in 43 Rh8 Kg5 44 g4! hg 45 Rg8+ Kf5 46 Rxg4
Jun-25-04  grozny: <seemingly won pawn endgame> Yes, it does look won, doesn't it? In fact, I would have preferred 42 b5 rather than 43 g3 in order to head toward that pawn ending even sooner. When I ran this by Fritz, however, he liked it for a couple of seconds until some more calculating apparently found it was not such a brilliancy after all: 42. b5 cxb5 43. Rxc4 dxc4+ 44. Kd4 h4 45. Kc5 Kf5 46. Kxb5 Kf4 47. Kxc4 Kg3 48. Kb4 Kxg2 49. c4 Kxh3. Anyway, my point is that the move does look tempting. A trompe l'oeil of endgames?

cu8sfan: Very interesting, <Pawn Ambush>. What are you trying to proof here?
Dec-01-04  Pawn Ambush: <cu8sfan> Man I think I'm going cazy I'm going over some Janowski games and most of them have g4 or ...g5! See that 46th. move.

...and so they split the point in a very appealing final position. :-0
