Nov-21-08  macphearsome: is there anything to get with today's pun or is it just a mockery of the guy's name?
Nov-21-08  ravrdj: Most of the titles of the Game's of the days are some sort of variation of one of the player's names. And why are you assuming its a mockery? Theres nothing funny about pizza!

Once: <macphearsome> I agree - not one of CG's best puns and not a great game, either.

Maybe I'm getting a bit too old and crotchety, but poking fun at someone for having a name you consider to be unusual does smack a little of xenophobia. Let's all have a laugh at Johnny Foreigner because his name doesn't sound like ours, hmmm?

To be fair to CG, it can't be easy trying to think up a new game (and a new pun) for every day of the year. But ones like this one make me cringe for a slightly different reason than usual.

al wazir: I think 37...Re4 (threatening 38...Re2+, followed by 39...Rxg2) would have drawn. After 38. Rxe4 Bxe4, what resources does white have?
Nov-21-08  NewLine: Well, the pun suppose to point at the reason that made this game special enough to become GOTD, so if the game is not so special, the pun wouldn’t make any point either...
Nov-21-08  amateur05: I guess black has an easy draw after 39...Be6.
Nov-21-08  shintaro go: <is there anything to get with today's pun or is it just a mockery of the guy's name?> It's quite tasteless, if I'm being honest. Might as well call it Deepun of the day.

I enjoyed the game and don't mind the pun too much either, though it's not brilliant. I recall you are English like me and i believe we are a particularly cautious nation when it comes to appearing xenophobic, possibly for good reasons, but wordplay on a foreign name is not xenophobic, particularly if on every other day of the year you perform wordplay on people's names :-)

Nov-21-08  prinsallan: 39... Be6 loses. Even I can win that game. Be my guest to play as black from there, <amatuer05> I respon with: 40 Kxd3 ... your move.
Nov-21-08  amateur05: <prinsallan> I would play 40....Bc4 and then keep moving the bishop from c4 to f1 or e2 and back. I can't see any constructive plan for white, or am I wrong...?

We may have to agree to disagree on this one. Some people can be offended by jokes based on their ethnicity - especially if the joke is from a majority against a minority. In effect we are saying that I am laughing at you because of your race or religion ... because you are different.

And is it made okay because we do it every other day?

Don't want to start a big argument here. You are perfectly entitled to your opinion. Perhaps this makes me cringe because I work in a public sector organisation and I am trained not to say things like this?

kellmano: <Once> I have had too many pleasant conversations with you to have an argument :-)

If you look back at the other puns 'Lasker ye shall find' for example, the joke can probably fairly be contextualised asa genuine word-play rather than a 'what a funny name' word-play. Obviously, you are entitled to your opinion too.

Sad to say i am missing your writing currently as my sub to CHESS has run out :-)

JimmyRockHound: I love bad puns. Bring them on. And the CG ones are not xenophobic at all! And, since I'm out of neutral, I, and many of my friends, find political correctness highly offensive. But no one is shouting for us...

Doesn't really work either....

JimmyRockHound: Maybe something along the lines of:

"Schveshnikov? You should go and see the doctor for that."

kevin86: Deepan pizza? Too bad this game was not played in Chicago. lol

I have to admire white,as these endings with BOOC are so hard to win.

JimmyRockHound: And in chess, why does White always get to play first?...

JimmyRockHound: Anyway forgive me from digressing from the main subject which is the beautiful realm of chess. I'm not much of a player but I have a 100% record in blindfold chess: played 1 - won 1. And I only needed one move (as white)to win. This could be a pretty decent CG puzzle: what was my devastating opening move?

I'll give the answer and the story behind the game sometime soonish.

Once: <JimmyRockHound> I have a 100% in blindfold chess too - played zero, won zero! Seems much too tough for my little brain.

<kellmano> No worries - it's all good. When I get around to translating ASCII into FEN I'll post some of the more humorous articles onto my home page.

  JimmyRockHound: "Schveshnikov - Schveshni-loose".

My one and only 'blindfold' chess game was in a pub after a long hard day of planting Sitka Spruce trees. But I don't think that is any clue to the game itself? It was a random moment in time...

Sorry - once I get stuck in a groove ,...and the fridge is full of cold ones....
