Patriot: I'm going to say 23.Rxg7+ is the answer.

23...Kxg7 24.Rg1+ Kh6 (24...Kh8 25.Be5+ f6 26.Bxf6#) 25.Bf4+ Kh5 26.Rg5+ Kh4 (26...Kh6 27.Ra5+ ) 27.Rg4+ Kh5 (27...Kxh3 28.Nf2#) 28.Ng3#

So, 23...Kh8 is forced. Here, I think 24.Rdg1 is the way to proceed. The tempting 24.Be5 fails to 24...Qa1+ 25.Kd2 Rd8+. 26.Nd6? Rxd6+ 27.Bxd6 Qa6 28.Be5 f6.

Oh well, it's late again!

  Patriot: Wow...I considered 24.Rg8+ Kxg8 25.Rg1+ Kh8 26.Be5+ and mates next. So I knew 24...Rxg8 was forced but for some strange reason I didn't see 25.Be5+ Rg7 26.Rd8#!

Jun-21-12  TheBish: P Moran vs E Franco, 1955

White to play (23.?) "Medium"

Think I must have seen this before.

23. Rxg7+! Kh8

Otherwise it's a mate in five: 23...Kxg7 24. Rg1+ Kh6 (24...Kh8 25. Be5+ f6 26. Bxf6# is a quicker end) 25. Bf4+ Kh5 26. Rg5+ Kh4 (or 26...Kh6 27. Rg4+ Kh5 28. Nf6#) 27. Rg4+ Kxh3 (or 27...Kh5 28. Nf6#) 28. Nf2#.

24. Rg8+!! Rxg8

If 24...Kxg8 25. Rg1+ transposes to the quick finish above.

25. Be5+ f6 26. Bxf6+ Rg7 27. Rd8+ Qg8

At first I thought it was mate here, forgetting that 25...f6 opened the diagonal for Black's queen.

28. Bxg7+ Kxg7 29. Rxg8+ Kxg8 and White is a piece up.

Awesome mating patterns!

agb2002: White has a rook, a bishop and a knight for a queen and two pawns.

Black threatens 23... Qa1+ 24.Kd2 Qxb2.

The first idea that comes to mind is 23.Rxg7+, taking advantage of the defenseless black castle:

A) 23... Rxg7 24.Rg1+

A.1) 24... Kh8 25.Be5+ f6 26.Bxf6#.

A.2) 24... Kh6 25.Bf4+ Kh5 26.Rg5+

A.2.a) 26... Kh6 27.Rg4+ (better than 27.Ra5+) 27... Kh5 28.Nf6#.

A.2.b) 26... Kh4 27.Rg4+ Kxh3 (27... Kh5 28.Nf6#) 27.Nf2#.

B) 23... Kh8 24.Rg8+

B.1) 24... Kxg8 25.Rg1+ Kh8 26.Be5+ f6 27.Bxf6#.

B.2) 24... Rxg8 25.Be5+ f6 (25... Rg7 26.Rd8#) 26.Bxf6+ Rg7 27.Rd8+ Qg8 28.Bxg7+ Kxg7 29.Rxg8+ Kxg8 30.Kd2 + - [N].

Jun-21-12  LoveThatJoker: <SuperPatzer77> I recognize that you are referring to all the fellow kibitzers who had posted prior to <TheBish> and I.

This said, it should be noted that neither he nor I missed the importance of the 24. Rg8+ Rxg8 25. Be5+ f6 26. Bxf6+ Rg7 27. Rd8+ Qg8 interposition.

Position after 27...Qg8

It may or may not be critical to have Black's K end up on g7 or g8, but as a good technical habit to get into, 28. Bxg7+ Kxg7 29. Rxg8+ Kxg8 is better for White as Black's K is one square further from h3.

Position after 29...Kxg8

As per my line in my original post, after 28. Bxg7+ Kxg7 29. Rxg8+ Kxg8 30. Nd6 b6 31. Nc8 White wins easily.

  SuperPatzer77: <Djoker> You're not missing something.

28. Rg8+! Rxg8 - see diagram below:

click for larger view

29. Be5+ f6, 30. Bxf6+ Rg7, 31. Rd8+ Qg8, 32. Bxg7+ Kxg7, 33. Rxg8+ Kxg8 (leaving White one knight up)

After 29. Be5+, we all overlook 29...f6 only move to avoid getting mated and allowing the Black Queen to move back to g8.

<TheBish> Well-done!!

Abdel Irada: <Damned if you do...>

In which White makes Black an offer he *can* refuse — but not for long.

It all begins with 23. Rxg7+, when Black can grab the rook immediately:

(1) 23. ...Kxg7; 24. Rg1+

(1.1) 24. ...Kh8?; 25. Be5+, f6; 26. Bxf6#

(1.2) 24. ...Kh6; 25. Bf4+, Kh5; 26. Rg5+

(1.2.1) 26. ...Kh6; 27. Rg4+, Kh5; 28. Nf6#

(1.2.2) 26. ...Kh4; 27. Rg4+!

(1.2.2.1) 27. ...Kh5; 28. Nf6#

(1.2.2.2) 27. ...Kxh3; 28. Nf2#.

Or he can wait a move:

(2) 23. ...Kh8; 24. Rg8+!

(2.1) 24. ...Kxg8; 25. Rg1+, Kh8; 26. Be5+, f6; 27. Bxf6#

(2.2) 24. ...Rxg8; 25. Be5+, f6!; 26. Bxf6+, Rg7; 27. Rd8+, Qg8; 28. Bxg7+, Kxg7; 29. Rxg8+, when White is left a knight ahead in an easily won ending.

Thanks to the saving clause in line 2.2, mate is not forced, but Black has nothing to hope for even so.

28. Nf2# (or Nf6#) is right. Thanks, you are a dear.

  SuperPatzer77: <LoveThatJoker> You're right.

I saw <TheBish>'s commentary. Black King is back to g8 instead of g7 after 32. Bxg7+ Kxg7, 33. Rxg8+ Kxg8

So, White Knight is ready to attack Black's two queen-side pawns.
