Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-19-16  The17thPawn: Stern's only win in the database and a good effort. Surprised black resigned before white fixed his fatal back rank though. Black still has some fight in the position even though he's lost with even average play.

An Englishman: Good Evening: What refutes 17...Qg7? 18.Rxd7,Qxd7; 19.Nxd7,Kxd7 yields two Bishops and two Pawns vs. two Rooks, an interesting imbalance but one that should favor Black. 18.Bf7+,Qxf7; 19.Nxf7,Kxf7; 20.Rxd7+ yields Bishop and two Pawns vs. Rook; White looks better but Black can fight on.

So what is the refutation of 17...Qg7?

Feb-19-16  The17thPawn: <An Englishman> Sorry but the queen is already on g7 at move 17.
Feb-19-16  Razgriz: Hi guys, what happens at:

14. Rxd6 Qxd6 ?

After:
15. Qf7+ Kd8
16. Qxg6

White wins a Knight but then the Queen is effectively "trapped" there because she's in too deep.

Feb-19-16  nalinw: I suppose

14. Rxd6 Qxd6
15. Qf7+ Kd8
15. Rd1

- getting the Queen for 2 Rooks and a great position

What about

17. ..... O-O-O ?

Feb-19-16  Razgriz: After:
17. ... 0-0-0
18. Be6
Would overload and pin the Bishop at d7 to the King. Removing the pin would open up the d-file to the Rook Queen Rook battering ram. Although Black might be able to last a few more turns with...

18. Be6 Bxe6
19. Rxd8+ Kb7
20. Ne5/Be5

This then would try and dislodge the pawn at c6, leave the b5 pawn to the mercy of the White Queen. With the Queenside blown wide open, I think White can win the game.

However, White isn't obliged to

Feb-19-16  Razgriz: I don't know what happened to my comment.

Anyhow. I think that the line I saw was horrible on Blacks end, but even after 17. ... 0-0-0, once the queenside pawn structure gets compromised, Whites Queen can have free reign on that side, not to mention the rooks can join in the fun and a knight can jump in as well. I'm a bit rusty at Chess so I wouldn't know how the line would go after 17. ... 0-0-0 but I think black would have to play great defense to not lose.

Feb-19-16  thegoodanarchist: No one names their kid "Adolf" anymore.

Hitler ruined a perfectly good name.

Feb-19-16  thegoodanarchist: Stalin was worse than Hitler, but people still name their kids "Joseph".
Feb-19-16  kevin86: White win s with four pawns for the exchange and a crushing attack.

Bubo bubo: <The17thPawn: <An Englishman> Sorry but the queen is already on g7 at move 17.>

I guess he meant <20.> Qg7, and that move indeed seems to be an alternative to the game line.

Feb-19-16  tajasana: What about 20. Qg7, Bf7+
Feb-19-16  tajasana: Sorry - 20...Qg7 21. Bf7+, Kd8 22. Rxd7+, Kc8 23. Be6
Feb-19-16  mikrohaus: 3...f5 might be the silliest defense to the Ruy (Spanish.) [It might have had legitimacy against pusillanimous (where the word "pussy" came from) players at one time, but it won't work today, where the average chess-playing child is looking to kill you and knows the bad move when he/she sees it.]

If you lose this w/ White, you need to reevaluate opening principles. There are at least 2 (maybe 4) ways for White to gain the advantage on move 4 (!!!.)

perfidious: <mikrohaus: 3...f5 might be the silliest defense to the Ruy....>

Come again? Maybe you should explain this to Radjabov, someone who can play a little.

<....[It might have had legitimacy against pusillanimous (where the word "pussy" came from)....]>

Really?

Feb-20-16  thegoodanarchist: "<....[It might have had legitimacy against pusillanimous (where the word "pussy" came from)....]>

I thought it came from "pussy willow"

Feb-20-16  Moszkowski012273: 19.Qxg6+...was quite incorrect. 19.Be6... is crushing.

An Englishman: Good Evening: My apologies to all, I should have written 20...Qg7 as <Bubo bubo> suggested.
Feb-21-16  Ayaend: <an englishman> you want to mean 20...Qg7 but white answer with 21.Bf7+!
