May-31-04  ajit: Easiest so far!
May-31-04  erikcu: In blitz chess you should keep puzzles like this in mind. Be it you are on the offensive or defensive.

  sacanimal: Promoting to a Bishop also wins.

  seoulmama: Of course the bishop promotion wins, but why bother? It is surely easier to win with the rook.
May-31-04  ruylopez900: Well, I was 6 seconds into calculating just how fast the Black king could get there while sacrificing the pawn and does he make it when it dawned on me.....the Rook!
May-31-04  Cerebrate2006: This one was quite easy, i was expecting something slightly harder for today, though it is a monday puzzle so i dont know why
May-31-04  dosen: may be this problem's aim is to show us we sometimes have to promote rook or bishop(not queen)

  paulalbert: Although I agree this is relatively easy, it's a great position for teaching, particularly to children, about the concept of underpromotion to avoid stalemate. Inadvertent stalemate's in winning positions is quite frequent in children's chess ( frequently because there is a sense of great accomplishment of promoting to 2 or 3 queens ), to the consternation of their coaches who maybe don't put enough emphasis on basic mates.I just watched a game on Playchess where K and R was agreed as a draw because after 25 moves the player could not force mate, and I think it was adult players, not kids. This game has the benefit of being studylike, but occurring in a real game. Paul Albert

  misguidedaggression: The point is that in easliy won positions like this sometimes our brain turns off and we just play on mindlessly, not realizing that the opponent can squeak out of it somehow. I know when I saw it I thought: "61...g1=Q! Wow, what an easy proble--oh, wait, that doesn't work..."

  iron maiden: It would be a nice change if once in a while chessgames.com gave us a puzzle like, "White to play and win/draw," only in the game he didn't actually make the move to win or draw.
May-31-04  ChessPraxis: This problem was so easy I did it in my sleep last night before I even saw it!

  talchess2003: for an IM white missed a lot of tactics..

  kevin86: All black needed to know was that he must promote immediately-and not to a queen,as it would be a stalemate. Promotion to a rook is of course an elementary mating position-while promoting to a lesser piece means more complications.

Sometimes,the simplest move is the best.-sometimes it's a trap.

  M.Hassan: 61....g1=R and Black wins. Obviously not 61...g1=Q which will result in stalemate

  lost in space: Congrats to Spain! What a team!

61...g1=R and White last hope (g1=Q stalemate) is gone).

I love Mondays

  Phony Benoni: I would definitely consider promoting to a bishop just to say I had done it.
Jul-02-12  Jason Frost: 61...g1=R?!, 61...g1=B!! is much more interesting.

  sevenseaman: Promoting to a Q is stalemate. Promotion to a B or N may not be enough for a win. So promote to a R.

61...g1=R 0-1.

  Phony Benoni: By the way, if White had a pawn on h2 the position would be a draw. Here's a study by Kovalenko that illustrates the point. White to play and draw:

<1.Kc6 Kb4 2.Kd5 Kc3 3.Ke5 e3 4.Kxf4! exf2 5.Ke3!>

Queen or rook promotions are stalemate. After 5...f1B 6.Kf4 Bh3 7.e4 Black's last pawn comes off, and if 5...f1N 6.Kf4 the knight cannot safely protect the pawn.

The bishop promotion works in today's puzzle because White can't trade off Black's last pawn after the bishop protects it.

Jul-02-12  MountainMatt: I had promotion to a bishop. I'm a patzer :)
Jul-02-12  Octal: I tried to make g1=N+ work but wasn't getting anywhere.

If I'm not promoting to a queen I almost always assume I'm promoting to a knight.
