Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-05-04   Chesspatch: huh? isn't this a win for black?

notyetagm: How? For Black to capture White's light-squared f- and g-pawns, the Black king would have to give the White king access to the d5 square and then the White king marches to b7 on the light squares (d5-c6-b7). Black could then defend his pawn chain base on a7 <only> by putting his bishop on b8. The Black bishop cannot stay on b8 to defend the a7 pawn with the White king on b7, however, so a7 falls. Then White promotes the a-pawn and wins.

<The base of the pawn chain is critical in endgames, absolutely critical.>. Since Black cannot simutaneously defend his pawn chain base on a7 and take the White f- and g-pawns, Black cannot win.

notyetagm: The final position is a great illustration of a <weak color complex>. Black cannot win this position because he has no control over the light squares, in particular, the d5-b7 diagonal.

  notyetagm: Play would go something like ... Kf4 Kd5 Kxg4 Kc6 Kxf5 Kb7 and now comes Kxa7, Kb7, a7, a8=Q and it is WHITE who wins.
Oct-07-04   Chesspatch: what about placing the bishop on the h4-d8 or h6-f8 diagonal and winning by zugzwang for black?
Mar-15-05   lopium: Yeah, it's not a draw. If the white king stay with his pawn, white is dead. Maybe white can win by trying to eat black's pawns... Dunn is one of my last names.
