ConLaMismaMano: Here Vallejo found a saving perpetual, otherwise he was cooked.

Gypsy: <... otherwise he was cooked.> I guess the cooking spice was the threat of 25...Bb4. And if 25.cxd3, then still 25...Bb4 26.Qc~ Qxd4 -- with boiling hot watter for White.
Jun-19-04  PinkPanther: I can't help but to think he misplayed this opening very badly, he pushes his kingside pawn like he's going for an attack but then he castles there? With that said, I hope Vallejo Pons loses tomorrow :)
Jun-19-04  dafish298: yea i must admit castling is highly unorthodox in this position..and this opening is very uncharacteristic of paco as well...does anyone know how the playoff system works?
Jun-20-04  PinkPanther: If they're tied after the normal games they go to two rapid games then to two blitz games (if still tied after the first two rapid games), and then if they're still tied after that they go to an "armageddon" blitz game where white gets 1 minute extra on his clock but must win, if he doesn't (if black wins or draws) the player of the black pieces advances into the next round.

iron maiden: I think the "armageddon" part of the tie-break system (as PP puts it) is certainly interesting, but I can't help but think that Black still has an overwhelming advantage because all he has to do is draw. Oh well, I suspect tie-breaks will rarely, if ever, come down to the armageddon game.

They were rather frequent in the Women's World Championship held a few weeks ago. But the format wasn't exactly the same. For starters, they didn't play two standard games at the beginning.

iron maiden: What were the results like? Was Black able to hold the draw easily in most cases?
Jun-20-04  PinkPanther: I believe yes, in most cases the person playing black came out victorious (in relative terms). I remember Lahno having to play a game like that with black, but she just flat out won the thing.

Shadout Mapes: Rather funny how you can draw someone 6 times in a row, and then beat them a minute down in a blitz game as black.
Jun-21-04  PinkPanther: Who drew whom six times in a row?
