plang: Played at Dortmund 2000; Anand finished tied for first with Kramnik at 6-3. Earlier in the year at Linares Khaljfman had played 14..Nf5 against Anand and White had won a complicated struggle; 14..a6 was new. Anand immediately went wrong with 15 Ng5? allowing the powerful exchange sacrifice 15..Rxg5; 15 g3 and 15 Rb3 are alternatives that have been played since this game. 23 Qxb5..Qa1+ 24 Bd1..Ne3 25 Bxe3..dxe 26 Ke2..Nc6 would have been winning for Black. With 31..Nc6? the tables started to turn in Whites favor; better was 31..c2 32 Bh4..Re8 33 g7..Nxe5 34 Qxe7..Rxe7 35 Bxe7..Qe8 36 Be4..Qg8 37 Bf8 and White has compensation for the queen. 35..Nc6 36 Rf8+..Nd8 37 Bc2 would have been winning for White.

The French Poisoned Pawn lines usually lead to terrific struggles.
