Apr-18-09		Hugh the Drover: Salinnikov's First Symphony is an unexpected hit. The first ten moves show a strong allegro (criticized by Rimsky-Korsakov for being too Germanic, which it is NOT), the next ten show feelings sad or forlorn in material loss, the Scherzo in the following ten ties things up nicely, and the final movement recapitulates the victory song. All in all, good use of the Russian idiom. A second symphony bodes well.
