  wwall: Or 27...Bf6.

Perhaps better is 28...fxg4 29.hxg4 hxg4 30.Rxg4 Kf7.

If 30...Rd8+, then 31.Kxc4 Rxd2 32.Nxh6 e3 33.Nf5 e2 34.Nd4, winning for White.

31.Kxc4 loses to 31...exd2 32.Rd1 f3 33.Nxh6 f2 and Black will queen a pawn. Also, 31.Nxh6 loses to 31...exd2 32.Rd1 Be2 33.Rxd2 Rd8+ and 34...Rxd2. White could play 31.Bxe3 fxe3 32.Nxh6 e2 33.Re1 Bb3 34.gxh5 with advantage.

Black should force a draw with 42...Re8 or 42...Rg8 43.Kf4 Rf8+ 44.Ke4 Rg8. Black should also draw with 42...Rg8 43.Kf4 Bxg4 44.Nxg4 Rxg4+ 45.Kxg4 Kxe5 46.c4 Kd4 47.b5 cxb5 48.cxb5 Kc5 49.b6 Kc6 50.Kf4 Kb7 51.Ke4 Kc6 52.Ke5 Kb7 53.Kd5 Kb8 54.Kc6 Kc8

Or 43.Kf4 Rf2+ 44.Kg3 Rf7 45.Bd4.

Or 43...Rf2 44.g5 Kf7 45.Ke5 Kg6 and perhaps a draw.

Drawish may be 44.Nxg2 Rxg2 45.Kf3 Rc2 46.Kf4

Black could also play 44...Bh1 45.g5 Rf2+ 46.Kf3 Rf8 and should draw.

If 45.Nxd5 Kxd5 46.g5 Ke6 47.g6 Rg2 48.g7 Kf7 49.Kf3 and perhaps a draw.

If 46.Kg4, then 46...Be4.

Perhaps better is 46...Rf3+ 47.Kg4 Be4.

Can Black play 47...cxd5 48.Kg4 Rf1 or 48...Rg8?

48...Ke4 is bad. Maybe best is 48...Ke6 49.g7 Re8 and 50...Kf7. Or 48...Rg8 49.g7 Ke6 50.Kf4 Kf7 51.Kg5 Rd8 and Black should draw.

or 51.Kg5 Ke6 52.Kg6 Rg8 53.c4 Ke7 54.Bc5+ Ke6 55.Bf8

or 52.Kf6 and 53.Kf7

55.bxc5 also wins easily.

Not 55...Bxg7, since 56.cxb4 cxb4 57.Kxb4 draws.

Calli: <wwall> Good stuff! Today a GM would almost automatically play 27...h4 to restrict White. Burn plays a complex line that doesn't quite work and then seems to be too proud to take the draws that you pointed out.
