  Willem Wallekers: <clocked>
Do you ever play otb chess?
Sep-30-04  SamuelS: If I were a computer, I would play the line suggested by <clocked> (46. Qxh8+ Qh7 47. Qf6! etc), but because it is difficult to calculate ten moves ahead accurately, I would simplify to the pawn endgame, which should give White very good winning chances.

Willem Wallekers: The pawn endgame is a deadsure win.

patzer2: While 43. Nxg6!? is interesting, it seems to fizzle out to a drawish ending after <themindset>'s suggestion of 45...Qd8!

Play might continue 45...Qd8! 46. Qf4+ Qg4! 47. Qxg4+ Kxg4 48. f4+! Nxf4 49. gxf4 Kxf4 with good drawing chances for Black.

Sep-30-04  ChessPraxis: I totally agree with Willem.

patzer2: White overlooked the sure win with 43. c5!! .
Sep-30-04  Drudge: how is that patzer2?

kevin86: I missd Monday and have gotten the last three-this one in an instant. This one ends in a mini-mill.
Sep-30-04  Zaius: My first combination I've ever found on chessgames.com! I'm so excited!
Sep-30-04  Whitehat1963: Missed it completely. I was thinking something more along the lines of 46. h4 (threatening 47. Qg5, Kh7 48. Re7 [knight is still pinned by the bishop on b1] winning the queen in the exchange). How does Crafty evaluate the position if white plays 46. h4?
Sep-30-04  gadfly: A little bit tougher than yesterday's puzzle, but still an easy one. Perhaps the theme preordains that. Nevertheless, the game itself is a pretty good one.

patzer2: <Drudge> Don't have time now to post an indepth analysis, but the idea of 43. c5!! is to undermine (i.e. remove) the pawn protection for the Black Knight on e5, enabling White to pick off two knights for a Rook with a decisive positional advantage.
Sep-30-04  EXIDE: Excellent ending. Includes a discovered check that gets a Queen !!!
Sep-30-04  trguitar: <Whitehat1963> Basically even. Black will play Qf7, killing white's attack.

46. ... Qf7 47. Qxf7 Nxf7 48. f4 d5 49. cxd5 Nd8 50. Rd6 Nf7 51. Re6

or maybe 46. ... Qf7 47. Qg5+ Kg7 48. Rxd6 Re8 49. c5 Re1 50. Bf5 Re2 51. Kf1

Sep-30-04  BoardSilly: Sweet combo, though it took an awful lot of to and froing to get there.
Sep-30-04  Whitehat1963: <trguitar> In your line, if 46. h4 is met with 46...Qf7, I'd play 47. Qg5+, Kg7 48. Re7+ winning the queen. The knight can't take the rook on e7 because the b1 bishop pins.
Sep-30-04  aw1988: The solution is a theme of deflection-Qxh8+! After Rxh8 Rxg6 and Rxd6+, white remains a piece ahead.
Sep-30-04  aw1988: Good grief. I've got every single one starting from monday this week. Tomorrow starts what I like to call the "impossible trio" friday, saturday and the immortal head of hydra, sunday.

Honza Cervenka: Black could have won an exchange for a Pawn playing 28...Ng5 29.Bxf5 Nf3+ 30.Kg2 Nxd2 31.Bxg6 hxg6 32.Qxd2 although it looks a little bit risky as black King is not much safe there. Nevertheless, 28.Ne4 would have been probably better than 28.Be4.

33...h5 too much compromises black's Kingside.

Instead of 39.b4 white could have played 39.Qc3! with double attack against unprotected Rook on a5 and Pawn on g6 (black Knight on e5 is pinned by Queen) which would have won the game immediately.

As <patzer2> pointed out, 43.c5 was better continuation than beautiful 43.Nxg6 which allowed defence 45...Qd8. The final combination is lovely.

Sep-30-04  aw1988: Note that Re7? is a mistake in view of Nf4+!
Sep-30-04  aw1988: My apologies, the knight is pinned.
Sep-30-04  Seraph88: Quite simple, interesting choice of moves. I wonder if he could've played this differently.
Jan-15-05  aw1988: <I've got every single one> Bah, terrible. I have "gotten" every single one. And it was true. I failed terrible on the Hydra.
Jan-15-05  aw1988: TERRIBLY****
