Chessical: An excellent game by Louis Paulson anticipating a defensive approach (Pirc, Austrian Attack (B09)) which did not come into accepted tournamant practice for another 80 years.

Unfortunately, due to lack of finanace and tournamant opportunities, it was extremely difficult for innovators to build on games like this. Louis Paulsen had to wait several years for his next tournamant opportunity, see Burn vs Paulsen, 1889. This was despite being in the top 10 in the world from the 1860's to 1880's.

It was to take a world champion - Wilhelm Steinitz, to lay the foundations of modern theory, by publishing analysis, propounding theories of positional play, and seizing the opportunities of the expanding tournament circuit at the end of the 19th century
