Black should accept that and start developing her pieces -- something like 11. ... Nc5, 12.Nxd8 Rxd8. Black has traded her Queen and a pawn for White's Bishop and Knight. White has the advantage, but there is a long game ahead. It would be a mistake for Black to try to save her Queen with a futile flight along the dark squares diagonal. It would only allow White to develop her other Knight and Bishop while wasting moves pushing the doomed Queen. But a simple developmental move like 11. ... Nc5 leaves Black in the game. |

Ng5+ ... black offers you two juicy white squares to attack - e6 and f7. Who could resist? And with check to boot. 11. Ne6 ... but of course. Attacking the black queen, grabbing the outpost of outposts, and generally cocking the cockiest of cocky snooks. 12. Nc4 ... excuse me, your majesty, but is this a little uncomfortable for you? I do apologise. No really, I do. 13. Nc7 ... which would be a family fork until you realise that the black queen is trapped as well. I can't claim that I saw the finish when I started the combination. I just followed the trail wherever it took me. |

It often amazes me how early in the game some of the positions arise; this is one of the earliest. I got this right away, because I saw this one recently (a few months ago) on Shredder Chess, and I used this as an example of trapping for some of my students. 9. Bxf7+! Kxf7 10. Ng5+ Kg8 11. Ne6
The bishop sacrifice is not preliminary to a king hunt, but to gain access to e6 for the knight. Not 11. Qb3+? d5 and there is no win. 11...Qa5
About the same is 11...Qb6 12. Nc4.
12. Nc4 Qa6 13. Nc7 and the queen is trapped.
