Jun-06-12  dufferps: I often feel that the masters resign too early. White has performed a nice sequence and will take black's queen. So be it. Black should accept that and start developing her pieces -- something like 11. ... Nc5, 12.Nxd8 Rxd8.

Black has traded her Queen and a pawn for White's Bishop and Knight. White has the advantage, but there is a long game ahead.

It would be a mistake for Black to try to save her Queen with a futile flight along the dark squares diagonal. It would only allow White to develop her other Knight and Bishop while wasting moves pushing the doomed Queen. But a simple developmental move like 11. ... Nc5 leaves Black in the game.

Jun-06-12  kevin86: There is neither a mate or the quick winning of the queen. Instead, black's queen is left to spin out of control and time lost to save here is deadly for her.
Jun-06-12  kevin86: Actually,I was wrong, the knights will trap the queen very soon.
Jun-06-12  Marmot PFL: An old trap, which usually fails if the queen has an escape square, and this caused black to let her guard down (8...Re8?). 9 Bxf7+ Kxf7 10 Ng5+ Kg8 (Kg6 makes no difference, as the king is not the target) 11 Ne6 Qb6 (or Qa5) 12 Nc4 Qa6 13 Nc7 over.
Jun-06-12  estrick: : <Caissas Clown: Yesterday I watched a documentary featuring the delightful Susan Polgar . She said, smiling, that every time she beat a man , he'd say he had a headache/cold/virus or whatever and that she had never beaten a healthy male opponent>

I may have seen the same video, or it may be something she says quite often. In fact, she's 'borrowed' that line from a master from an earlier age (can't remember who now). So, when I heard her say it, it didn't sound original.

I guess it's still a good line, though.

chrisowen: Placid opening gets set alight with Paehtz finding her feet early on

nice little queen hunt for home leg suggests a nine move combo shuch

as 9.Bxf7 kxf4 10.ng5+ kg8 11.ne6 qb6 12.nc4 qa6 13.nc7 queen gest

trapped and so EP chalks one off on her 'list' will make a new

exception for Monika straight forward opening trap.

doubledrooks: White goes queen hunting with 9. Bxf7+.

For example: 9... Kxf7 10. Ng5+ Kg8 11. Ne6 Qa5 12. Nc4 Qb5 13. Nc7 Qc5 14. Be3

Jun-06-12  Once: This one feels like following a trail of breadcrumbs.

9. Bxf7+ ... well, you've got to, haven't you? It would be rude not to take the f7 pawn.

10. Ng5+ ... black offers you two juicy white squares to attack - e6 and f7. Who could resist? And with check to boot.

11. Ne6 ... but of course. Attacking the black queen, grabbing the outpost of outposts, and generally cocking the cockiest of cocky snooks.

12. Nc4 ... excuse me, your majesty, but is this a little uncomfortable for you? I do apologise. No really, I do.

13. Nc7 ... which would be a family fork until you realise that the black queen is trapped as well.

I can't claim that I saw the finish when I started the combination. I just followed the trail wherever it took me.

Phony Benoni: The line about never beating an opponent who was in perfect health supposedly originated with Amos Burn. I don't know who he stole it from.
Jun-06-12  gofer: A nice rope-a-dope, queen hunt.

++ Wham ++

<9 Bxf7 Kxf7>

Jun-06-12  Tiggler: <LTJ>
<<9. Bxf7+ Kxf7> (9...else 10. Bxe8 )
<10. Ng5+ Kg8 11. Ne6 Qb6/...Qa5 12.Nc4! Qc5>

(12...Qa6 13. Nc7 and Black's Q is trapped; 12...Qb5 13. Nc7 Qc5 14. b4 Black's Q is trapped)

<13. b4! Qb5 14. Nc7> 1-0 as Black's Q is trapped.>

12... Qc5?
13. b4??
B's Q is en prise, so 13.Nxc5.

Jun-06-12  mistreaver: Black's f7 looks rather weak.
White's idea should be based on a2-g8 diagonal.
9 Bf7+ Kxf7
What's the most accurate here?
Now i see that black can block the diagonal with d5.
Hmm perhaps not so easy as i first thought.
Hmmm i give up, it is too late, i'm tired and i can't see it.
Jun-06-12  agb2002: <Patriot: <agb2002> In line <A.1.a.i) 12... Qa6 13.Nc7 Qa4 14.b3 traps the queen [Q+P vs B+N].>, what's wrong with 14.Qxa4?>

Obviously the coffee still didn't reach my neurons when I chose b3 instead of Qxa4...

Jun-06-12  DarthStapler: Got it
Jun-06-12  sevenseaman: <It would be rude not to take the f7 pawn>!!

I rather thought I was a tad out of turn when I went to the pawnbrokers to pledge my B. I didn't know I was being polite too.

Jun-06-12  Tiggler: <Once> and <sevenseaman>: <It would be rude not to take the f7 pawn>!!

I never realized <Once> was English until I saw this post. "Rude not to" gives him (her) away - Ooh, sorry, let's have a nice cup of tea - Ooh luvley!

Jun-06-12  TheBish: E Paehtz vs M Seps, 2004

White to play (9.?) "Medium/Easy"

It often amazes me how early in the game some of the positions arise; this is one of the earliest. I got this right away, because I saw this one recently (a few months ago) on Shredder Chess, and I used this as an example of trapping for some of my students.

9. Bxf7+! Kxf7 10. Ng5+ Kg8 11. Ne6

The bishop sacrifice is not preliminary to a king hunt, but to gain access to e6 for the knight. Not 11. Qb3+? d5 and there is no win.

11...Qa5

About the same is 11...Qb6 12. Nc4.

12. Nc4 Qa6 13. Nc7 and the queen is trapped.

The two knights work beautifully together!

Jun-06-12  ForeverYoung: the king is not the target in this puzzle but the queen!
Jun-06-12  Tiggler: <ForeverYoung> <the king is not the target in this puzzle but the queen!>

If a knight on a central outpost can be called an octopus, are two knights (on e6 and c4) a hexadecipus?

Jun-07-12  Shams: <Tiggler> Lesser-known James Bond film: "Hexadecipussy".
Jun-07-12  dragon player: The e6-square is weak:

9.Bxf7+ Kxf7
10.Ng5+ Kg8
11.Ne6 Qb6

Or 11...Qa5

12.Nc4 Qa6

If 12...Qc5 13.Be3 traps the queen.

13. Nc7

and the queen is trapped.

Time to check.

-----------

Black already noted the problems and resigned.

3/3

Jun-08-12  Tiggler: <Shams: <Tiggler> Lesser-known James Bond film: "Hexadecipussy".>

Our fellow kibitzer <Patriot> starred in that one.

Sep-21-14  Ke2: Just like the missed tactic in Judit Polgar vs Spassky, 1993.
Oct-01-16  The Kings Domain: Nice miniature. Impressive deep thinking by the adolescent Pähtz.
