perfidious: <Zenchess> The last time I saw Browne play, at Stratton Mountain, VT, in 2000, seeing him play 1.e4 vs A Ivanov was a surprise, and Ivanov's reply 1....c6 was a bigger one-I've never seen him play the Black side of a Caro-Kann.
Feb-16-06  midknightblue: <offramp> I think she was probably in more time trouble, because she is not recording her moves anymore, but Browne is still recording his moves.
Jul-19-08  Jedithious: Kosteniuks resigning was way too premature. This game does not seem worthy of being a game of the day.
Jul-19-08  khense: Chessgames: Do you have any answers to the above questions?
Jul-19-08  PinnedPiece: Going with the pun....

Yes she has brown eyes!
- and -

He probably did eye the girl during this game.

al wazir: After a lot of to-ing and fro-ing (white played Bg5 three times in the first 20 moves and black countered with 20...Ra8 and 22...Ng8), black finally just froed in the towel.
Jul-19-08  PinnedPiece: <offramp: On video, oddly enough!http://video.google.com/videoplay?d... Perhaps someone can reconstruct some of the rest of the game. It looks to me as if Browne was in more time trouble than Kosteniuk.>

Well, that game isn't this game. Or if it is, its ten moves down the line.

Jul-19-08  RookFile: It does appear that Browne has an absolutely clear advantage in the final position, but I wouldn't resign as black yet.
Jul-19-08  holland oats: This is probably an incomplete score. There are no other Browne vs. Kosteniuk games in the database, and as pointed out by PinnedPiece, the game being played in the google video looks like the same game a few moves later (the position looks very similar but Browne brings his rooks to h3 and c3, and Kosteniuk brings her rook to b7).
Jul-19-08  erimiro1: A game with no end, that shouldn't be in the exclusive collection of games of the day.
Jul-19-08  whiteshark: <PinnedPiece: <Well, that game isn't this game. Or if it is, its ten moves down the line.>>

It's this game! Final position

and the video started after! <29...Rc8> and continued <30.Bb3 Rh7 31.Rh3 Rg7 32.Rdd3> end of the video.

Jul-19-08  Chessmensch: A better name might have been "Bishops' Dance."
Jul-19-08  Alphastar: I think the position is hopeless. I can't see how black is going to save the h5-pawn considering that after a further Rhg3 and a rook exchange on g3 (from whiteshark's continuation) black has to play Kf8 to prevent white from playing Rg7, when white can simply scoop up the h5-pawn with his bishop. And then march the passed h-pawn to victory.
Jul-19-08  kevin86: A game with no end-is thatlike a horse withy no name?

What is so great about this game?

Jul-19-08  erimiro1: <kevin86>I also thought about that song
Jul-19-08  Wolfgang01: Ms. Kosteniuk resigned, because she didn't like the mental suffer to continue a position without any glimpse off ability to resist the oncoming attack of GM Browne. The P on h5 will fall very soon followed by the whole king-side. In a 5-minute-game you would continue some more moves - but in a tournement-game it seems a little early but a right correct and fair decision. If she would have played against an opponent with a rating about 2000 she would have made some more moves, to see his attacking plan.
Jul-19-08  Travis Bickle: Fischer played The Sicilian because he was an attacker. Ms. Kosteniuk never had an attack in this game. I think she should play something more positional like The French and save herself some grief.
Jul-19-08  Marmot PFL: I don't see anything special about this game either. Looks like a fairly typical Sicilian after 29...Rc8.
Jul-19-08  percyblakeney: If anyone doubts that the score is incomplete, it's just to compare the video of a later stage in the game, in the link posted by <offramp>, and the photos of the beginning of it from Kosteniuk's site:

http://www.kosteniuk.com/albums/uso...

Jul-19-08  calvs12: does it seem like GM Browne desperately needs a bathroom break? (in the video provided by offramp).

Maybe Kosteniuk resigned due to a 'health' scare?

Jul-19-08  jovack: browne is not all there mentally...

this is the worst GOTD posted yet imo

Jul-20-08  Once: Okay, let's weigh up the evidence. <offramp's> video and <whiteshark's> analysis shows that there are more moves than we have recorded.

In the video, neither player seems to be recording moves. I think that Browne is just ticking off the moves, rather than writing them down. That means that both players have less than 5 minutes of time left.

The game continues after the video, so we don't know how it finishes. Incidentally, Chessbase.com's database has the same moves as CG's. The oficial tournament website seems to have been removed.

In the final position, white has all the play, but we ain't done yet.

Jul-21-08  PinnedPiece: On Ms. Kosteniuk's website, Contact button, Sent july 21 2008:

"Hi Alexandra,

The Chessgames.com database has this game of yours:

Browne vs Kosteniuk, 2004

U.S Open match with GM Browne. Is there any way you could recall the final moves of this game? Both Chessbase and Chessgames seem to have an incomplete score.

If possible, you could enter the moves in a kibitz to that game... We will all be richer!

Thanks."

Jul-21-08  RookFile: That's cool. I just sent in an entry asking her to come over to my house.

We serve great mashed potatoes and gravy.

Jul-21-08  Duque Roquero: What's going on?? Say something Chessgames.com!!
