Mar-20-12 | | sevenseaman: <Oxpawn> Your solution <34. Qxh2+
35. KxQ Nf3+
36. BxN Rh4++
Or
36. Kh3 (or Kh1) Rh4++>
or
34. Qxh2+
35. Kxh2 Nf3+
36. Kh1 Rh4+
37. Bh3 Rxh3+
38. Qh2 Rxh2#
or <viking78>'s
<34...Qxh2+ 35.Kxh2 Rh4+ 36 Bh3 Ng3 37.Kh1 Rxh3+ 38.Qh2 Rxh2#> or the text
are all correct. Blasphemy if anyone says there is any hole in your line. The computers just like to be efficient and prefer the shortest. I think you knew it to be correct and no axe could possibly fall. Understatement? |
|
Mar-20-12 | | viking78: <sevenseaman> I am pretty sure that 1.Rf3+ is the first move now don't know what black respond, maybe 1...Rf6 (Kg8 not good cause Rf8+; if Ke6 then Re3+ Kf7 Qf4 ; if Kxg7 Qe5+ Kg8 Rxg6 Qxg6 Qxe7 and white is 2 pawns up) Now 2. Rxf6 Kxf6 could end in a draw, so force with 2.Qxe7+ Qxe7, which i see also not good for white, it must be something else but not enough time and I have to give up. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | newzild: <Oxspawn> Your variation also wins. Well done. It actually transposes to the game if White doesn't capture the knight. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | viking78: <sevenseaman> PS. could be a win by pawn promotion on A file cause any black move is pinned bye white Queen lol (joke) |
|
Mar-20-12 | | Limpin Kt: <7cmn> just saw ur puzzle. I'm trying. Plz don't post the answer until then. Thanku. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | desiobu: The active rooks and insecure king suggest the solution. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | Limpin Kt: <7cman> isn't Rg6!?kg6 Qe7Qe7 g8=Q a won endgame? My theoritical knowledge with queen only endgame limits my possibilites of analysis.. :( |
|
Mar-20-12 | | viking78: <Limpin Kt: <7cman> isn't Rg6!?kg6 Qe7Qe7 g8=Q a won endgame? My theoritical knowledge with queen only endgame limits my possibilites of analysis.. :(> looks good 2 pawns up I think u solved it |
|
Mar-20-12 | | viking78: PS and white will win with his A pawn like i said :) |
|
Mar-20-12 | | Limpin Kt: <vking> :) |
|
Mar-20-12 | | Jim Bartle: My solutions for the rest of week:
White to win: Qxh7
Black to win: Qxh2 |
|
Mar-20-12 | | sevenseaman: Terrific <Limpin Kt> You cracked it, congratulations. <Viking78> was hovering close. Well you guys are keen puzzle solvers but I cannot post many puzzles on the POTD site as it will muddle up the main puzzle site. I have got many puzzles, even harder ones. If you guys had a chess forum I could post them there. What I suggest you visit my forum (just click on my handle or avatar and you'll get to my forum) and indicate if you wish the puzzles posted there ( and you post their solutions only there). I will follow up your desire whatever it is. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | Oxspawn: Thank you <sevenseaman> and <newzild>. Seriously though, sevenseaman, not understatement. I often check and then recheck positions, and feel confident until someone shows me different, and the position crashes around my ears.
I don't mind - you learn through your mistakes, but just occasionally it is also nice to learn from doing something right! |
|
Mar-20-12 | | PinnedPiece: <Oxspawn: White has some promising attacking moves but is choking rather than protecting the white king. “Quick sir, jump in this iron suit and let me lock you in.” I think this goes:
34. Qxh2+
35. KxQ Nf3+
36. BxN Rh4++
Or
36. Kh3 (or Kh1) Rh4++ with the knight protecting the rook>This is what I had. Took me about 35 seconds to confirm. . |
|
Mar-20-12 | | hugogomes: <Oxspawn>, your solution is no less correct than Rh4+ first. Game ends at move 38 with mate in any of the two correct variations. Move order in this case is not important. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | kevin86: This one is destined to end badly for white. After the queen sac-the encroaching knight gives the final move an Arabian flavor: 34...♕h2+ 35 ♔xh2 ♖h4+ 36 ♗h3 ♘f3+ 37 ♔h1 ♖xh3+ 38 ♕h2 ♖xh2# kismet or yachtzee,if you don't have the colored dice. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | Once: The interesting thing here is that black just kept on hammering at the h file. No matter how many pieces white put on the file, black just kept on hammering away. You might call it a woodpecker mate. Rat-a-tat-a-tat. Oxspawn's solution is fun and just as good. I suppose that I gravitated towards 35... Rh4+ because it only gives white one reply. And variations that give our opponent only one reply are often interesting. But 35...Nf3+ also mates. Okay, so it might give white three different replies but each of them end in a grisly demise. Well spotted, sir! |
|
Mar-20-12 | | dragon player: A lot of pressure on the white king. A sac to finish it: 34... Qxh2+
35. Kxh2 Rh4+
36. Bh3 Nf3+
37. Kh1 Rxh3#
Must be a solution, maybe there are more, with
35... Nf3+ for example.
Time to check.
--------------
Yeah, I was right.
2/2 now |

Mar-20-12
 | | Penguincw: I got the puzzle, but missed how many blocks and moves white still had. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | KingV93: Well...I missed the 'obvious' move, unfortunately, and it is rather apparent, though tough for a Tuesday.... but what is the opinion here of 34...♕xf2 35.♗xe5 ♕xg2+ 36.♖xg2 ♖f1+ 37. ♖g1 ♖fxg1# Probably just overcomplicating the more elegant puzzle solution given but I looked at 35.♗xe5, 35.♗e4, 35.♕d1 and can't seem to find a good refutation. Since there are many stronger players here and good analysts as well I was hoping to solicit an opinion without resorting to Fritz, not that there's anything wrong with that, just don't feel like it today. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | zb2cr: <viking78>, Consider yourself acknowledged... and I missed <VincentL> too. |

Mar-20-12 | | sevenseaman: <KingV93> <Well...I missed the 'obvious' move, unfortunately, and it is rather apparent, though tough for a Tuesday.... but what is the opinion here of 34...Qxf2 35.Bxe5 Qxg2+ 36.Rxg2 Rf1+ 37. Rg1 Rfxg1# Probably just overcomplicating the more elegant puzzle solution given but I looked at 35.Bxe5, 35.Be4, 35.Qd1 and can't seem to find a good refutation > . and continued...I do not have an engine to be sure of 35.Qe1 but to my peasant mind it looks to be the refutation of your otherwise solid line. |
|
Mar-20-12 | | stst: Purely by eye-balling:
34.... Qxh2+
35.Kxh2 Rh4+
36.Bh3 Nf3+
37.Kh1 Rxh3#
All White moves are forced. |
|
Mar-21-12 | | sevenseaman: <KingV93> 35. Qe1 was a typo. 34...Qxf2
35. Qd1 Rg4
36. Bxe5
(and Black loses momentum as his Q+ can be handled)
36...Kg8
37. Qd8+ Qf8▢
38. Bd5+
swings it White's way. |
|
Mar-21-12 | | KingV93: <sevenseasman> Thanks for the response and taking time to look at my idea. If 35.♕d1 then 35...♖d4 36.♗xd4 cxd4 37.♕xc4 ♕xg1 38.♔xg1 ♘f3+ puts Black in command. What does White do after 35.♖d4? Ah, I see, ♕h5 spoils the fun for Black. oh well, almost a great idea. Thanks for the help! |
