  notyetagm: Position after 24 ... Ne5-g4?

Here Black has just blundered with 24 ... Ne5-g4?, threatening the <PHILIDOR'S LEGACY> smothered mate with 25 ... Qb4-b6+.

But in this position White has <THE MOST IMPORTANT THING ON THE CHESS BOARD>: it is White's move!

And White also has a <LOOSE SQUARE NEXT TO THE ENEMY KING>: the <LOOSE> g7-square which is attacked by the White e6-knight and defended only by the Black h8-king. If White could only bring his White g5-queen into contact with this critical square, then it could be mate.

So Larsen (White) strikes with the winning <DECOY FOR TEMPO> 25 Rg7-h7+!, forcing instant resignation.

Position after 25 Rg7-h7+! 1-0

The point is that Black is mated in the variation 25 ... Kh8xRh7 26 Qg5-e7+ Kh7-g6 27 Qe7-g7#, shown below.

notyetagm: Larsen played the <DECOY FOR TEMPO> 25 Rg7-h7+! for the sole purpose of being able to bring his White g5-queen into contact with the <LOOSE> g7-square <WITH TEMPO (CHECK)>. The <CHECK> means that Black is unable to meet the threat to the g7-square which is now <EN PRISE>; instead, Black must get out of <CHECK>. <<<The <DECOY FOR TEMPO> is often used for this purpose, to bring the queen into contact with a <LOOSE> square near the enemy king <WITH TEMPO>, just as Larsen uses it here.>>> Often this is a rook sacrifice on h8 (e.g., Rh1-h8+!) in order to bring the queen into contact with the <LOOSE> h7-square in coordination with a White g5-knight; here the rook is sacrificed (25 Rg7-h7+!) in order to bring the queen into contact with the <LOOSE> g7-square in coordination with a White e6-knight.

Also note that the mating combination is made possible -ONLY- by Black's last move, 24 ... Ne5-g4?: this move <LEFT BEHIND> the f7-square. With the Black g4-knight still on e5, Black could respond to Qg5-e7+ with ... Rf8-f7, the Black f8-rook <BLOCKING> the check on f7 with the support of the Black e5-knight.
