May-29-04  iron maiden: Now THAT's funny. <Ben Lau>, here's one for your collection. Anyone know who was calling Pono?
May-29-04  Bobsterman3000: It was Ruslan Illyzhuminov...
May-29-04  PinkPanther: Yes indeed, the immortal cell phone game. I'm actually surprised they finally included these games in the database. According to Ponomariov, it was one of Kasparov's cronies who called to sabatoge him because of the cancelled WC match.
May-29-04  iron maiden: Still, he should have at least turned the cell phone off.
May-29-04  midknightblue: Holy cow, noone has commented on this game. Too bad. I would love to see some analysis. It is funny (and sad) that Ponomariov lost cuz of his cell phone. There is an interesting pin on blacks e6 rook. White has both rook and a knight that can also put more pressure on the e6 square. Not sure if white can win that rook (black is up a minor). Please, someone smart, let me know what ya think :)
May-29-04  midknightblue: wow, all these above comments came up since i started typing.
May-29-04  ToTheDeath: On chesscafe.com Hans Ree gives the following line:

29. Nf4 Ng4 30. g3 Ne3 (30...Qe5 31. Nxe6) 31. Nxe6 Nxd5 32. Rxf8+ Qxf8 33. Nxf8 Kxf8 34. Rxd5 and White is close to winning.

Thus Supermariov was already in deep trouble when his phone rang.

May-29-04  poktirity: "Saved by the bell" hehe. Quite funny chessgames.com :)

kevin86: Wow,a cell phone forfeit! I wonder what the ringing tune was.

At least this cell phone wasn't on the highway-where it could kill someone.

May-29-04  PinkPanther: <iron maiden>
He was given the cell phone earlier that day as a birthday present by the organizers of the tournament, he had no reason to believe that the cell phone was going to ring. In reality, it wasn't his fault.
May-29-04  apple head: This happended to Kasparov in 2004 Linares, his cell phone rang and he didnt get disqualified!
May-29-04  masterwojtek: World is a fair place
May-29-04  apple head: No the world isnt a fair place, FIDE is a stupid dictatorship! when Kaspy's cell rings off he doesnt get disqualified
May-29-04  Swindler: The ironic side of this is that not long ago Agrest lost a game after 1.e4, just after that move HIS cellphone rang and he automatically lost. Some funny comments says that it was Ponomariov who rang him ;-)!
May-29-04  Franz the Stampede: that's the funniest thing ever!
May-29-04  DanielBryant: Wonder if he had a musical ringtone.
May-29-04  Bobsterman3000: I think Bobby Fischer was calling Pono with tips on how to hold onto your "World Championship" as long as possible by refusing to play again...

tpstar: Wow, you hear about pros "phoning it in" but this crosses the line! I'm sure Ponomariov is quite the smooth operator, and his hectic schedule causes a busy signal, but based on the tone of these comments, this game just seems phone-y. Still, it was pretty cell-fish for White to collect the win given the circumstances.
May-29-04  Andrew Chapman: Two questions:

Why 4...Bxf3? He's spent two moves fianchettoing the bishop and then he exchanges it for a knight, leaving weaknesses on the light squares, including the a8-h1 diagonal. He could have done with it to defend e6 at the end.

Also, how about 19...Qc5 attacking e3, rather than retreating to b8?

May-29-04  uponthehill: Interesting, which model of phone had Pono :)
May-29-04  MatrixManNe0: Personally, I believe 19...Qc5 is not a very effective move, white can easily defend the pawn, and the queen remains stranded in the center.

As for 4...Bxf3, it scatters white's pawns, making it slightly harder to develop. Although, I still agree with Andrew Chapman and the fianchetto probably was a waste of time...

Very funny ending!

May-29-04  uponthehill: Funny! Agrest in Polish means gooseberry :)

lol!

:o)

May-29-04  PinkPanther: Don't get me started on puns....oh well, I'll give you one. This win by Agrest seems a bit "phoney" to me.
