Nov-25-04  suenteus po 147: To say that 27...Rb8 is a blunder is to state the obvious. What I want to know is, what should black have played instead?
Nov-25-04  Eatman: Something like Rd8 would work , position seems about dead even.
Nov-25-04  shortsight: Nakamura wins, but this is a bad game. He seemed to be struggling! He doesn't look to have grasp Ruy Lopez like other experts do.
Dec-01-04  Pawsome: Black's plan to apply pressure down the b-file seems to be the only way to get an advantage. Instead of the gaffe on move 37, perhaps he might have tried 37 .., Ra4, ffollowed by Rb4 followed by Rb7 if he's chased back by the black squared B.
Jan-29-05  GreenDayGuy: How about 27... Re8, taking control of the e- file?
Mar-30-05  THE pawn: < He seemed to be struggling! He doesn't look to have grasp Ruy lopez like other experts do.>

Where did he struggle? I personnaly think his first weak move was the threat on the knight with black bishop on 3.Bb5. After that, 7. c3 was also weak. Somehow he managed to win this even after the first few weak moves.

<How about 27... Re8, taking control of the e- file? >

I guess it comes back to the same point with Rd8, if I had to choose between black and white after move 28, I would have taken white for his position.

Apr-11-06  zev22407: Elementary
Apr-11-06  yataturk: Nice puzzle...

These puzzles make me a clumsy player.

Apr-11-06  khense: I hate to think how many moves like that I missed when I was playing five minute games.
Apr-11-06  blunderboy2k5: a simple puzzle
27...Rb8 is the blunder
i also see this puzzle on chessbase.com
Apr-11-06  mjk: Where's the fighting spirit? Nalimov says ♔+♗ vs. ♔+♗+♗ is a draw; so if Black can trade off all the ♙s ....

By the way, ♔+♘ vs. ♔+♗+♗ can take over 65 moves to mate, with best play.

LIFE Master AJ: I found this easier to solve than yesterday's puzzle ...

Poor Steve, he had a fair game ... then walked into a zinger.

Apr-11-06  dzechiel: About a second to get this one, easier than Monday's puzzle.

Always a shame when you spoil a good game with a simple blunder.

Apr-11-06  chesswonders: Certainly seemed easier than yesterday's! BTW, this is my 400th!
Apr-11-06  bumpmobile: What I didn't see until too late was a good reply to 28...Rb4, but after 29. Bf4 Rxc4 39. Rd4+, white gets the rook too.
Apr-11-06  Confuse: easy easy! bring on wednesday :D
Apr-11-06  ckr: Easy, five more to go.
Apr-11-06  geigermuller: easy one and i agree with khense, I should play longer games to detect winning chances like this
Apr-11-06  prinsallan: Easy line and yes, 27... Rb8 - what a blunder.
Apr-11-06  guest66: saw the solution but my problem is that in a real match i would have blundered too with Rb8. What makes me this: a patzer or a grand master ? (just joking)
Apr-11-06  kasp: again??
Apr-11-06  mr j: Nice puzzle :)

I probably would have spotted this in a game and then become smug at my brilliance. However had I been black, I doubt very much that I would have foreseen and prevented the position from occouring!

The shame of being rubbish at chess :(

Apr-11-06  Richerby: Regular cg.com puzzle solvers might also be interested in the puzzles at http://www.chessbase.com/puzzle/

(Under `Tactics training' rather than `special puzzles', though the latter may also be of interest to some.) The position in this game after 27... ♖b8?? is the first on the page of puzzles from the `2005' US Championship.

Apr-11-06  Richerby: <THE pawn> You're a day early for claiming that the Ruy Lopez is a weak opening...
Apr-11-06  WarmasterKron: <AJ> Agreed, this seemed much simpler than yesterday. Probably because it's quite a common skewer tactic and because the board's a lot less crowded.
