Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-11-05  BadTemper: Why not 33. Rxa4?
Feb-11-05  Cyphelium: <BadTemper> 33. Rxa4 Rc2.
Feb-11-05  waddayaplay: Maybe 21.b4 is preferable. Idea is to put a piece on c3 (queen looks most likely) and create a blockade.
Feb-11-05  BadTemper: Cyphelium! Ah! Thanks, damn pure chess blindness there, once you told me I understood instantly.. grr how do I avoid missing moves like that...
Jul-08-05  Gowe: Taking more than two seconds to see the move. Thinking, not asking. Once you think for a while and you didn't see what was happening then ask.
Aug-28-05  LeSwamp: A) 3...b6!?. Compare with the 3rd match game : 3...e6 4.Bd3 b6 5.b3 Bb7 6.Nbd2 Bb4 7.Bb2 Ne4 8.Bxe4? fxe4! 9.Ne5 0-0?! 10.c3! Be7 11.Qg4! Rf5 12.f3! exf3 13.gxf3!? Bh4+ 14.Ke2 Qf6 15.Qh3 d6 16.Ng4 Qe7 17.Rhg1 Kh8 the game ended as a draw.

B) 19.d4!?. To be considered : 19.a4!= ; 19.Qd2!=.

C) 19...Ba6. Corzo had 19...a4! at his disposal.

D) 25.Kh2!?. Preferably 25.Bb2! .

E) 28.Kg3?!. Capablanca is already in trouble. Better choices were : 28.Be1 clear advantage Black ; 28.Rf1 clear advantage Black ; 28.Rg1!? clear advantage Black.

F) 29.Kf2??. After this terrible move, the game is lost. Capablanca had to play 29.Rf1! clear advantage Black with idea Rf2 and Rc1.

G) 30...h5?. Simply : 30...b5! 31.h4 R6c7!

H) 31...Bxa4. Better were : 31...Bb3 32.Rxc6 (only move) Rxc6 33.Rc1 (only move) Rxc1+! 34.Qxc1 Bxa4 winning for Black ; or 31...Qe4 32.Kf2 (only move) Bxa4 (only move) 33.Rxc6! Rxc6 winning Black.

I) 35.Ra3. 35.Rc3! The c-file is a key element! Still, Black retains a huge advantage.

J) 36.g3? Mistake. 36.Bc3! Rb1+ (only move) 37.Kf2 with idea Ra1 to try trading the rooks and remaining with opposite bishops. Black retains a his huge advantage, still.

K) 38.h4?. 38.Ra3 had to be played. See next comment.

L) 38...Bc2?!. Go for the paralyzing 38...Ba2! with idea a4-a3.

M) 45.Ra3?!. Better is 45.Ba3 b4! 46.Bc1 b3! 47.Rxa4 b2 (only move) 48.Ra7+ Kc6 49.Bxb2 Rxb2+ 50.Ke1 Rg2 51.Ra6+ Kc7 52.Rxe6 Rxg3 53.Kf2 Rg2+ 54.Kf1 White still losing, but Black has some work to do before pocketing the win.

Nov-22-05  capablancakarpov: capablancakarpov: This was the last game of the match.Final score: Capablanca winner by 7-6 (+4 =6 -3)
Mar-17-06  MorphyMatt: White's pawn structure is weird at the end.
May-24-09  Lutwidge: I get the feeling this game made an indelible impression on the young Capablanca, for how many times have we seen him on the winning side of such endgames?
